Title: Build Capacity for Smart Communities and Schools to Prevent Childhood Overweight and Obesity in Thailand: Impact Evaluation of the Nutrition Training Programme

Research question: To what extent does the nutrition training programme promote healthy eating behaviour among schoolchildren?

Methods and expected outcomes: This study will take place in Chiang Mai province in northern Thailand. Two districts will be purposively selected for intervention (Saraphi) and control (Hang Dong) communities. The study will be conducted in three phases. First, an interactive map of the community and school food environments will be developed in both communities. In-depth interviews with food shop owners and local food producers will be performed. Locations of food shops will be mapped, and food choices in each shop will be surveyed. Local food producers will be tracked based on where school staff buys ingredients for the lunch programme. Second, the nutrition training programme will be designed for schoolchildren in grades 4-6. Teachers in intervention schools will be interviewed for information on nutrition topics, materials, and teaching methods. The course contents will be developed in the Thai language and include an online platform for nutrition education, community activities, and lunch menu planning. Three experts will evaluate the course contents. The clarity and readability will be pretested by teachers in a school in Chiang Mai province who will not be involved in the programme. Third, the nutrition training programme will be implemented with a cluster randomised trial. Knowledge scores, dietary intake, and nutritional status of schoolchildren will be collected before the start and after three months of the intervention. The effectiveness of the nutrition training programme will be evaluated by impact evaluation. The expected outcomes will be an effective nutrition training programme for schoolchildren in grades 4-6 and an interactive map of food environments.
