Caleb Wall has been working on the social and gender dimensions of agriculture in Uzbekistan since 2001. His consultancy and academic work has been focused in the rural environs of Tashkent, as well as extensive field research in the Khorezm region. After graduating from the University of Canterbury (New Zealand) with a joint degree in Political Science and Feminist Studies, he undertook consultancy work for the New Zealand Agency for International Development. This consultancy included a project that partnered with Tashkent research institutes to promote new ‘resource conservation technologies’ to increase cotton and wheat yields whilst reducing mechanical, water and human inputs. This work was primarily in Tashkent, with frequent travel to Pakistan. In addition he has also consulted in Cambodia, Tonga and Vanuatu. I n 2004 he completed his Masters study with first class honours in Development Studies from Massey University (New Zealand) for his dissertation entitled “Multiple Barriers to Technology Change in Rural Uzbekistan: A Development Perspective”. The preparation of this thesis involved in-depth sociological research in the Tashkent and Khorezm regions. Since then he has been working as a Doctoral Fellow at Bonn University, conducting anthropological research in Khorezm region, under the aegis of a Bonn University / UNESCO project. His current thesis work is on Indigenous Agricultural Knowledge in Khorezm. In late 2006 he is scheduled to submit his dissertation to the University of Bonn, on “Knowledge Management in Rural Uzbekistan: Peasant, Project and Post-Socialist Systems of Knowledge in Khorezm”. Besides this work he is also employed as a management consultant, working in the extractive industries sector in the former Soviet Union.
