Since 1998 he has been working in different projects on Amazon region: from 1988 to 1992 he worked in an international cooperation between Museu Paraense Emilio Goeldi (MPEG), Ford Foundation, and Overseers Development Administration (ODA), studding a eco-physiology of floodplain forest in Amazon estuary; from 1992 to 1996 he worked in Woods Hole Research Centre (WHRC) and Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecuária (EMBRAPA), studying ecology and biogeochemistry cycles in upland forest; from 1997 to 1998 he worked in SHIFT project (Study of Human Impact in Forest Tropical) supported by "CNPq (Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Cientifico e Tecnológico)" studying ecology and management of fellow vegetation; in 1999 he was engaged in Ph.D. study in University of Goettingen supported by CNPq.
