befristet zu besetzen. Gesucht wird eine in Forschung und Lehre ausgewiesene

Persönlichkeit, die ein fundiertes Wissen und internationale Erfahrungen in folgenden

Bereichen nachweisen kann: Landnutzungsplanung mit dem Schwerpunkt Wald/Gehölze in

den Tropen und Subtropen; Analyse und Entwicklung von forstlichen und agroforstlichen

Betriebssystemen; Integriertes Management der Landnutzung auf lokalen und

übergeordneten räumlichen Ebenen.

Der/Die Bewerber/in soll in den Forstwissenschaften oder angrenzenden Disziplinen

ausgewiesen sein. Gemeinsam mit dem Inhaber der Professur für Tropische Forstwirtschaft

ist der/die Juniorprofessor/in für die Koordination des Masterstudiengangs "Tropical Forestry

and Management" sowie des Erasmus-Mundus-Studiengangs "SUTROFOR (Sustainable

Tropical Forestry)" zuständig. Unterrichtssprache in diesen Studiengängen ist Englisch. Die

Fakultät legt besonderen Wert auf eine überdurchschnittliche pädagogische Eignung, die

durch Evaluierungsergebnisse belegt werden soll. Internationale Erfahrungen mit dem

Schwerpunkt Tropen/Subtropen sind anhand von erfolgreichen Forschungskooperationen

nachzuweisen. Die Akquisition und Betreuung von Forschungsprojekten in Tropenländern

wird erwartet. Die Einstellungsvoraussetzungen richten sich nach den geltenden

Bestimmungen des Sächsischen Hochschulgesetzes i.d.j.g.F. (§46 SächsHG). Danach sind

ein abgeschlossenes Hochschulstudium, die pädagogische Eignung sowie eine besondere

Befähigung zur wissenschaftlichen Arbeit (in der Regel eine herausragende Promotion)

nachzuweisen.

Juniorprofessoren werden für die Dauer von bis zu 4 Jahren beschäftigt. Das

Dienstverhältnis kann nach positiver Evaluation um 2 Jahre verlängert werden, wobei die

The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) is one of the world´s largest independent

organisation dedicated to the conservation of nature. WWF-Central Africa Programme Office

(CARPO) is advertising the position of a Principal Technical Advisor (PTA) for the Dzanga-

Sangha project (DPS) in Central African Republic.

 

MAJOR FUNCTIONS

 

The Principal Technical Advisor (PTA) is responsible for providing technical assistance and

oversight to the Dzanga-Sangha Project, consisting of the Dzanga-Sangha Special Dense

Forest Reserve and Dzanga-Ndoki National Park and its broader landscape in its aim to

maintain the biodiversity of the southwestern forest of the CAR. The PTA will serve as the

principal representative of WWF to the Dzanga-Sangha project and will work under the

technical and administrative supervision of the WWF-CAR Liaison Officer. The PTA's main

function is to advise the National Project Director to establish and implement an efficient

management system for the sustainable conservation and use of natural resources for the

Dzanga-Sangha Landscape and to transfer his/her technical knowledge and project

management experience to the National Project Director (NPD), such that the NPD can

assume responsibility for the project management.

The PTA will be based at the project site in Bayanga, and may visit other sites that relate to

the project's advancement.

 

The PTA will represent as requested or needed by the NPD the project throughout the CAR

and outside the country at conferences (e.g. the Sangha Tri-National Park meetings) and will

promote project activities and associated tourism activities.

 

LOCATION

 

The PTA will be based at the project site in Bayanga, and may visit other sites that relate to

the project's advancement including the protected areas of the Sangha Trinational Initiative.

 

WORKING RELATIONSHIP

 

The PTA will establishes and maintain close working relationships with the CAR Government,

GTZ, and Dzanga-Sangha project personnel and liaise closely with relevant donor NOs such

as WWF Germany, Netherlands and US. The PTA works closely with the Liaison Officer for

WWF Office in CAR, to ensure full contribution to and involvement of the Liaison Officer for

WWF-CAR Office, to ensure execution of the DSP and full contribution and involvement of

the CAR Office in CARPO activities.

 

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATION

 

· a minimum of eight years of experience in working in conservation or development

organizations, especially in a similar biome;

· An advanced degree (a minimum of an MSc in biology, ecology or a related field) or

equivalent experience in natural resource management is required.

· demonstrate a strong working knowledge of forest and wildlife ecology and

management principles;

· familiarity with the WWF and other project funding agencies, especially the World

Bank, US Government agencies, European Union and GTZ;

· strong managerial and administrative skills and excellent organizational skills;

· fluency in English, French and preferably Sango;

· strong communication skills, particularly in writing reports and proposals for donor

agencies;

· strong interpersonal skills,

· depth and breadth of knowledge of conservation and development issues

Position description and responsibilities

Reporting to the Director of the Agricultural Science and Production department, the

Professor of Horticulture will provide leadership, strategic direction, and operational

management in the area of horticultural science and production in support of the university´s

teaching, research and outreach programs. The specific responsibilities of the Professor of

Horticulture include:

· Develop an innovative teaching, outreach, research and production program in

horticultural science.

· Teach undergraduate level courses in agricultural sciences, with a special emphasis

on horticultural sciences.

· Provide technical support to students working on horticultural related topics for their

graduation projects.

· Participate in the supervision and implementation of the practical education activities

(learning by doing) of the horticultural unit and the department.

· Coordinate activities with other Zamorano units, especially: Soil science, plant

science, irrigation, integrated pest management, farm machinery and marketing.

horticultural unit.

Prior experience in research and a university environment is desirable.

AVRDC - The World Vegetable Center is a non-profit, autonomous international agricultural

research center with headquarters in Taiwan and regional offices around the globe. AVRDC

conducts research and development programs that contribute to improved incomes and diets

in the developing world. AVRDC is seeking an experienced plant pathologist for its pan-

African program on Vegetable Breeding and Seed Systems for Poverty Reduction in Africa,

which will:

· establish four national units for vegetable breeding, breeding support, and seed

production in four countries (Cameroon, Madagascar, Mali and Tanzania), as well as seed

health and marketing in South Africa;

· build vegetable seed system capacity in those countries as well as in their

neighboring countries;

· network the national vegetable breeding programs, private African seed companies

and vegetable seed supply systems;

· promote increased and sustainable vegetable production, marketing and

consumption in these countries.

Key Responsibilities

The plant pathologist will coordinate and conduct plant pathology related activities in support

of the program's National Breeding Units (NBUs) and with the program's seed health

specialist. Specific duties will include:

· determining major diseases of targeted introduced and indigenous vegetables

· initiating and implementing strategic research on vegetable diseases that are of

significance to the program to support the program's NBUs

· designing protocols to screen and select introduced and indigenous vegetables for

resistance to diseases

· provide leadership in establishing disease screening capacity in the four NBU and

surrounding countries

· promoting good agricultural practices (GAP) in targeted regions by developing an

integrated disease management strategy for the control of major diseases, and through

training and networking

· establishment of infrastructure, procurement of equipment and supplies, staff

training, and design of plant pathology protocols

· collaborating closely with staff of all four NBUs, the Seed Health and Marketing unit

in the Republic of South Africa, AVRDC staff at the Regional Center for Africa in Tanzania,

the Sub-Regional Office in Mali, and AVRDC's headquarters

Qualifications and Experience

· Postgraduate degree in plant pathology (PhD preferable)

· At least 5 years experience in including mycology, bacteriology and/or virology

· Experience in vegetable diseases, integrated pest management and GAP

· Work experience in sub-Saharan Africa or developing countries

· Strong computer literacy, statistical data analysis capabilities and familiarity with

software for data compilation and analysis

· Strong communication skills in spoken and written English, working knowledge of

French.

· Ability to perform effectively and efficiently in a multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural

environment.

The Position

ICARDA has an immediate vacancy for a Research Associate in the `Rehabilitation of

agricultural livelihoods of women in marginal and post-conflict areas of Afghanistan and

Pakistan: Participatory research, dissemination and adoption of improved dairy goat

production system´ project. The project will contribute to the overall goal of improving the

livelihoods of rural women and women-headed households in conflict/post-conflict and

marginal areas of Afghanistan and Pakistan.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

The Research Associate will be based 8 months in Pakistand and Afghanistan and 4 months

at ICARDA headquarters in Aleppo/Syria. He/ she will report to the Project Coordinator on

technical and administrative issues. In close collaboration with ICARDA Offices in

Afghanistan and Pakistan and national and international partners, the Research Associate

will undertake duties and responsibilities as follows:

· Coordination, supervision and implementation of the community-based field research

activities of the goat project in Punjab and Balochistan Provinces of Pakistan and in

Nangarhar and Baghlan Provinces of Afghanistan in consultation with the Project Coordinator

at ICARDA. This task primarily entails careful planning of disseminating appropriate

technological, institutional and policy options (TIPO), and technology gap testing research

protocols and methods of data collection and analysis

· Identification, testing, and dissemination of TIPO packages for goat production

improvement.

· Coordinate the monitoring and evaluation of project activities.

· Develop and monitor work plans with project partners in Pakistan and Afghanistan to

ensure optimum participation, ownership and timely delivery of project outputs.

· Organize project workshops, meetings, monitoring tours, and capacity building.

· Collect, analyze and report technical results from research activities.

· Write work progress and annual reports, and help in preparing publishable

manuscripts.

· Perform any other jobs assigned by supervisor.

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

· PhD degree in agriculture - specialization in breeding, nutrition and/or production of

small ruminants, preferably goats.

· Minimum of 3 years field experience in research and development of small ruminant

production systems, preferably goats in the dry areas.

· Knowledge of, and experience in, participatory and community-based approaches to

research and development.

· Good command of spoken and written English, local language is an advantage.

· Demonstrated ability to summarize data and write technical and non-technical

reports in English.

· Good inter-personal skills and ability to work with multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural

teams.

· Excellent command of MS Office applications and proficiency in statistical packages.

· Willingness and ability to travel frequently and to undertake field activities where

understanding of the cultural circumstances of the participating communities is crucial and

mandatory

· Valid driving license and a good driving record.

The Position

The Project Leader will be the Head of ICARDA Office in Tehran, where the position is

based. She/he will carry out effective administration of the office to meet the needs of the

collaborative Iran-ICARDA Project, including facilitation of visits to and from ICARDA and

coordination of Iran-ICARDA collaborative research activities. She/he will also be responsible

for the following:

· Serve as the ICARDA Representative in official contacts between ICARDA and

Iranian authorities and in official meetings, scientific events and other meetings held in Iran.

· Provide expert advice, backstopping and training, as appropriate, to NARS, in crop

breeding and related disciplines.

· Conduct, in collaboration with NARS and ICARDA scientists and managers, training

courses and scientific meetings, as per agreed work plans.

· Coordinate, in collaboration with NARS and ICARDA´s regional coordinators, the

research and training activities of the Highland Research Network.

· Handle management related to the ongoing project research and training activities,

and prepare expense reports for the ICARDA Finance Department.

· Prepare reports on collaborative project activities and other related topics.

 

The Project Leader reports directly to the Deputy Director General (Research).

 

Qualifications and Experience

The successful candidate will have an earned PhD degree in plant breeding, preferably

cereal breeding. She/he should have at least 10 years experience in agricultural research,

technology transfer and development, with a minimum of 5 years working in collaborative

projects with NARS. In addition to formal qualifications in agriculture, candidates must also

have proven leadership and administrative skills, including excellent communication

capabilities. The candidate should be fluent in spoken and written English and preferably

have a good working knowledge of Farsi. A demonstrated ability to work with others in

participatory team approaches is highly desirable.

AVRDC - The World Vegetable Center is a non-profit, autonomous international agricultural

research center with headquarters in Taiwan and regional offices around the globe. AVRDC

conducts research and development programs that contribute to improved incomes and diets

in the developing world. AVRDC is seeking for an experienced Molecular Marker Specialist

for its pan-African program on Vegetable Breeding and Seed Systems for Poverty Reduction

in Africa, which will:

 

· establish four national units for vegetable breeding, breeding support, and seed

production in four countries (Cameroon, Madagascar, Mali and Tanzania), as well as seed

health and marketing in South Africa;

· build vegetable seed system capacity in those countries as well as in their

neighboring countries;

· network the national vegetable breeding programs, private African seed companies

and vegetable seed supply systems;

· promote increased and sustainable vegetable production, marketing and

consumption in these countries.

 

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will conduct marker-assisted selection in vegetables and provide

coordination of the applied molecular marker activities for the program at the AVRDC-

Regional Center for Africa, in Arusha, Tanzania. Specific responsibilities include:

 

· developing a marker-assisted selection (MAS) platform to support the program in

close coordination with AVRDC's molecular breeding strategy

· implementing the MAS and genotyping projects, and providing technical and

scientific assistance to vegetable molecular marker activities in the National Breeding Units

(NBUs)

· managing the Applied Molecular Marker Laboratory at AVRDC-Regional Center for

Africa and developing simple, low cost, and efficient genotyping protocols

· supporting the program vegetable breeders in germplasm fingerprinting including

determination of inbred and hybrid seed purity

· collaborating with plant pathologists/entomologists to establish research activities

focused on molecular pest and disease detection and diagnostics

· collaborating with AVRDC's Molecular Breeding program in phenotyping of genetic

populations and germplasm to identify QTLs and develop improved lines for Africa (e.g.

disease resistance, tolerance to drought and heat stress)

Qualifications and Experience

· Postgraduate degree, preferably at the Ph.D. level, in Molecular Genetics, Plant

Breeding, Plant Pathology, Horticulture, or related discipline with a strong background on the

application of molecular markers in breeding

· Experience in plant molecular genetics and strong understanding of DNA markers.

Familiarity with major DNA marker systems (SNP, SSR, RAPD, AFLP, etc.) and current

progress in genomics is expected

· Direct practical experience in molecular techniques including DNA extraction, PCR

amplification of DNA, and agarose/polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis

· Experience in marker development, linkage map construction, and trait/QTL analysis

is desirable

· Skills in experimental designs for genetic mapping of traits and familiarity with

statistical and genetic analyses software would be an advantage

· Excellent communication and organization skills, and the ability to work

independently and within a team, are required

· Proficiency in English and French

· Ability to perform effectively and efficiently in a multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary

environment

 

Terms of Appointment: The incumbent will be based in Arusha, Tanzania. The initial

appointment is for two years with possibility of annual re-appointments. Salary and

perquisites are commensurate with qualifications and experience, and are comparable with

those of other international agricultural research centers.

The Organization

ICARDA is a non-profit international agricultural research center in a worldwide consortium of

15 centers, supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research

(CGIAR). The CGIAR is co-sponsored by the World Bank, the Food and Agriculture

Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural

Development (IFAD), and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). With a staff

of over 400 scientists and support personnel, representing more than 45 nationalities,

ICARDA addresses two key areas of agricultural research: germplasm improvement (cereals

and legumes) and natural resource management. The Center has a global mandate for

barley, lentil and faba bean improvement, and a regional mandate for the improvement of

wheat, chickpea and forage and pasture legumes. A major emphasis is placed on the

conservation and management of land and water, and improved productivity of small

ruminants in integrated farming systems in dry areas. The Center´s research and training

programs are implemented in partnership with national programs and, in most cases, with

other CGIAR centers as well as advanced research institutes in both developing and

industrialized countries.

 

The Position

ICARDA is seeking a project manager for the regional coordination, management and

administration of a research program on sustainable land management in Central Asia as

part of an ADB-GEF multi-country partnership framework project. The project (Central Asian

Countries Initiative for Land Management or CACILM) is an innovative 10 year program

based on national priorities that will focus on the restoration, maintenance and enhancement

of the productive functions of land in Central Asia (http://www.adb.org/projects/CACILM).

He/she will be responsible for day-to-day management of activities, liaison with national

partners and the national secretariats in each of the five Central Asian countries. The position

requires substantial experience in implementing multi-disciplinary projects in a multi-cultural

environment, capacity to facilitate and catalyze inter-organizational cooperation, fluency in

English and a working knowledge of Russian.

 

The Project Manager will report to the Regional Coordinator-ICARDA-CAC/Head, CGIAR-

CAC Program Facilitation Unit based in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, with additional reporting

responsibilities to the CACILM Secretariat based in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.

 

Qualifications and Experience

· At least 10 years experience in international agricultural research with demonstrated

ability to manage projects and meet tight technical and financial reporting deadlines, good

inter-personal and motivational skills.

· A demonstrated ability to prepare reports in English with a sound track record of

published research articles in international journals.

· Experience in analyzing and integrating complex biophysical and socio-economic

issues.

· Experience in facilitating participatory, communal and multi-stakeholder processes.

· Solid knowledge of the complexity of land degradation issues in different agro-

ecosystems.

 

Terms of Appointment

The appointment will be for an initial period of one year, renewable thereafter on an annual

Responsibilities

ILRI would like to recruit a postdoctoral scientist as part of a team working with forage

genetic resources conservation and use to carry out research on characterization and

regeneration of forage germplasm under phase 2 of the World Bank funded project on

rehabilitation of global public goods in the CGIAR genetic resources system, and who will

specifically:

 

o Assess diversity and develop criteria for characterization of tropical forages

o Manage data collection for characterization of a wide range of tropical forages

o Analyse data and prepare scientific publications on the diversity in the forage collection and

augment the information posted on the forage diversity web site

o Supervise technicians in the technical aspects of regeneration and seed processing of

tropical forages

o Collate data and augment the database on breeding systems and regeneration methods for

tropical forages

o Implement research on breeding systems in tropical forages
