CALL FOR PAPERS
2008 FIFTH BIENNIAL CONFERENCE
OF HONG KONG ECONOMIC ASSOCIATION
Chengdu, China
June 10-12, 2008
The Hong Kong Economic Association has been hosting its
biennial conferences in Hong Kong since 2000. Each time we
had world class scholars including Nobel Laureates in
Economics and prominent leaders including the Financial
Secretary and the Secretary for Financial Services to serve
as keynote speakers. Each time it is well attended, with
participants coming from countries across the world. The
success of this event has been made possible by the united
effort of all seven universities in Hong Kong.
This year we are co-organizing the biennial event with the
Southwestern University of Finance and Economics (SWUFE) in
Chengdu. The conference will be held in Chengdu during June
10-12, 2008.
KEYNOTE SPEAKERS:
We have already successfully invited, as keynote speakers,
Prof. James Mirrlees of the 1996 Nobel Laureate in Economic
Sciences, Prof. Robert Barro of Harvard and Editor of QJE,
Prof. Andrea Prat of LSE and Managing Editor of Review of
Economic Studies, Prof. Chris Taber of University of
Wisconsin-Madison and Editor-in-chief of Journal of Labor
Economics, and Prof. Justin Yifu Lin of Peking University.
Prof. Canice Prendergast of Univ. of Chicago and Editor of
Journal of Political Economy is still considering.
Chengdu is the capital city of Sichuan Province. The city
and its adjacent areas are famous for its natural beauty
and long history. Among the 20+ universities specializing
in economics and finance in China, SWUFE is the largest
(20K students) and one of the best.

Searle Center on Law, Economics and Regulation
Northwestern University School of Law
"EMPIRICAL STUDIES OF CIVIL LIABILITY"
October 9th & 10th, 2008
The Searle Center on Law, Regulation, and Economic Growth
is issuing a call for original research papers to be
presented at a Research Symposium on Empirical Studies of
Civil Liability at Northwestern University School of Law.
The Symposium will run from 9:00 AM on Thursday, October
9th to 12:30 PM on Friday, October 10th.
TOPICS:
The goal of this Research Symposium is to present and
discuss high-quality empirical studies of civil liability.
The topics covered and the exact format of the symposium
will be determined in part by the submissions. Potential
topics include, but are not limited to: Arbitration of
Civil Disputes, Civil Justice Reforms, Mass Torts, Class
Actions, Tort Reform, Medical Malpractice, and, in general,
empirical studies of the impact of changes in substantive
and procedural rules and regulations.
FURTHER INFORMATION:
The Symposium will feature a Keynote Dinner Address by W.
Kip Viscusi, University Distinguished Professor of Law,
Economics, and Management, Vanderbilt University. There
will be a reception, dinner and program on Thursday evening.
Authors will receive an honorarium of $1,000 to cover
reasonable transportation expenses. The Searle Center will
make hotel reservations and pay for rooms on Wednesday and
Thursday.
The Symposium format will include Discussants of the
various papers. The typical Discussant will be asked to
comment on two papers as part of a panel discussion.

Papers prepared for the Research Symposium on "Empirical

SUBMISSION, REVIEW PROCEDURE AND TIMELINE:
Proposal Submission Deadline: Research Proposals should
include an abstract (300 words maximum) and c.v. Proposals

by a three-member committee. Authors will be notified of

Revision Deadline: November 10, 2008. Upon revision in
response to comments received at the symposium, papers will
be permanently hosted on the Searle Center website.
Honoraria will be paid in two installments: 50 percent
upon presentation at the symposium; 50 percent upon
submission of a revised paper that the author is willing
to put on the Searle Center website.

Summer Economics Fellows Program
The American Economic Association and the National Science
Foundation are once again sponsoring a fellowship program
designed to increase the participation and advancement of
women and underrepresented minorities in economics. This
fellowship allows the fellow to spend a summer in residence
at a sponsoring research institution such as a Federal
Reserve Bank or other public agency.
DESCRIPTION:
During their residency, fellows participate as members of
the research community while engaged in a research project
of their own choosing. Fellows will be mentored by
experienced economists both on scientific issues and career
issues such as negotiating publications, the job market,
and advancement strategies. Fellows are typically either
junior faculty or graduate students at the dissertation
stage.

Doctoral Training Program in Economics and Social Sciences
The Graduate Center of Economic and Social Research at the
German Institute for Economic Research (DIW Berlin)
welcomes applications from highly qualified post-graduated
students from all over the world to attend its structured
doctoral training program in economics and social sciences.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Applicants must hold a MA degree or a diploma in economics,
business and administration or social sciences in order to
apply. Degrees from other related fields (such as civil
engineering or statistics) also fulfill the admission
requirements of the program. Students with a degree in
economics follow the economic track that leads to a PhD in
economics; students with a degree in sociology follow a
social science track which leads to a PhD in sociology.
There is a number of core courses that both groups of
students will attend.
ABOUT DIW BERLIN:
The German Institute of Economic Research DIW Berlin is one
of the leading economic research institutes in Germany. We
are an independent, non-profit institute involved in
economic research, service and policy advice. We co-operate
closely with universities in Berlin and Brandenburg and in
international academic networks.
The goal of Graduate Center's activities is to provide
young, outstanding doctoral students with a research
environment and a training structure that will develop
their talents in an accordingly exemplary manner. It leads
them to a deep understanding of economic and social
processes and offers them the opportunity to apply their
knowledge within the professional research environment of
one of the leading economic think tanks in Germany. The 3-
year program follows a dual training approach. It offers:
- high-level core and field courses in the first year
- one research internship in Berlin
- a three month stay in Washington DC including advanced
courses by US-based scholars and research activities at
international renowned think tanks
- on-the-job training within research projects of the DIW
Berlin in the 2. and 3. year
After successfully finishing the programme students have
submitted a number of papers to refereed scientific
journals. They will receive a certificate confirming
participation together with a doctoral degree.
SCHOLARSHIP:
The Graduate Center offers a scholarship of 1000 Euro per
month in the first year to each doctoral student admitted.
After successful completion of the first year the doctoral
students are assigned to the research departments of the
Institute. Research positions are offered depending on the
volume of research projects under work.

The Munich Graduate School of Economics (MGSE) offers a
distinguished three-year Ph.D. program in Economics to
outstanding young graduates. We offer:

1 POSTDOCTORAL SCHOLARSHIP
The program provides advanced training for in-depth
research into global market integration, its consequences
for institutional change, and its impact on the role of
governments in the organization of economic activity. These
themes are widely conceived and allow for applications in
any field of economics. We offer a wide range of Ph.D.
courses, all taught in English. The German Research
Foundation (DFG) supports excellent doctoral students with
a three-year scholarship in our Research Training Group.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Applications for doctoral scholarships are welcome from
graduates who hold a Master's degree or a German university
Diploma in economics or a closely related field, passed
with distinction. Candidates with a degree in statistics,
mathematics or physics are also encouraged to apply.
Graduates need to prove a strong quantitative background as
well as interest and ability to conduct independent

RESEARCH GRANTS AND VISITORS 2008
Netspar, the research network on Pensions, Aging and
Retirement based in the Netherlands, invites proposals for
academic research papers and visitors. Netspar conducts
innovative scientific research on all aspects of the
economics of ageing.
TOPICS:
Topics of interest are, among others:
- Macroeconomic aspects of ageing and retirement;
- Life cycle behaviour of individuals;
- Ageing and health;
- Financial and investment decisions of pension funds and
financial institutions.

RESEARCH GRANTS:
In 2008, a maximum of 10 grants of 10,000 euro each are
available. Proposals for a research grant should contain
the following information:
- A description (one or two pages) of the research question
and an indication how the paper contributes to the
existing literature and to Netspar's research programme;
- A description of data needed and other relevant
information for the feasibility of the project, plus a
timetable for completion of the project;
- A statement about other funding for the project (if
applicable);
- A title page with names of all authors and contact
details of the corresponding author; a copy of each
author's CV.
Grants are awarded under the condition that the paper
contains new and original work. Upon completion, the
authors will be invited to submit their paper to the
Netspar discussion paper series and present their paper
at a Netspar workshop. Research proposals can be submitted

VISITORS:
We invite top researchers in the area of pensions, aging
and retirement to apply for a one week to three-month
visit. This programme allows researchers in the economics
of pensions and aging to join forces with the Netspar
research group and present their work at one of the pension
days or workshops.
Netspar has its main facilities at Tilburg University, but
visitors may also stay at one of the other research
universities participating in Netspar: Amsterdam (UvA and
VU), Groningen, Maastricht, Rotterdam, and Utrecht. Netspar
will cover travel (economy fare) and accommodation costs.
The applications should contain a brief statement of
purpose and a recent full CV. There is no formal deadline
for submissions, but for visits in 2008 we prefer
applications to arrive by March 1, 2008.
