ZEF HEALTH organizes workshop on climate change, nutrition and health in Burkina Faso
During a three-day workshop from January 21-23, 2026, held in Ouagadougou, capital of Burkina Faso, ZEF HEALTH presented and discussed three large-scale collaborative research programs on climate change, nutrition and health. Over 30 researchers and 40 stakeholders from Burkina Faso, Kenya, Ghana, Germany, France, Sweden and the United States discussed implementation insights, result interpretations, published conclusions, and knowledge transfer into practice.  The high-level event was hosted by Dr. Ali Sie, Director of Centre de Recherche en Santé de Nouna (CRSN) and Prof. Dr. Abdramane Soura, Principal Scientist at Institut Supérieur des Sciences de la Population (ISSP). It was organized by Prof. Dr. Ina Danquah, Hertz-Chair Innovation for Planetary Health and Director at ZEF, University of Bonn (UoB). 
Philipo Jacob Mtweve defends doctoral thesis on Road Infrastructure Development in Sub-Saharan Africa
Philipo Jacob Mtweve (ZEF ECOL) obtained his doctoral degree from the Faculty of Agricultural, Nutritional and Engineering Sciences of the University of Bonn on January 21, 2026. “The choice is not whether to build roads in Sub-Saharan Africa, but where and how. This endeavor is demanding evidence-based frameworks that integrate biodiversity conservation with rural development imperatives”, says Philipo about his doctoral research, which he concluded today with a successful defense. 
Fernando Rodriguez-Camayo defends doctoral thesis on Climate Resilience and Coffee Households’ Food (In) security
Fernando Rodriguez-Camayo (ZEF ECOL) defended his thesis on “Climate Resilience Actions and Coffee Households’ Food (In)security in Western Honduras” on January 19, 2026, at ZEF. 
ZEF study shows how high food prices can have lifelong negative health consequences.
When food prices skyrocket during an economic crisis, urban populations and people with low levels of education are primarily affected. This can have lifelong negative health consequences – such as stunted growth in children.
Right Livelihood College at ZEF organizes another workshop
On December 2-3, 2025, the Right Livelihood College at ZEF brought together 15 selected and invited international young researchers and global experts working on sustainable natural resource use, biodiversity conservation, climate resilience, and environmental justice at a workshop at ZEF. Contributions highlighted the varied socio-ecological pathways through which communities navigate environmental change and pursue more just, resilient futures.  
ZEF and GIZ discuss and disseminate findings at workshop
December 1, 2025. The project team of „Agrifoodsystems Transformative Research and Policy Guidance” and their partners from the GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit) project “Knowledge for Nutrition (K4N)” in Brussels held a hybrid workshop titled “Persistent stunting in Sub-Saharan Africa: local insights from three countries” at ZEF in Bonn. 
Micely Díaz Espaillat presented research at Congress of Social Sciences in Argentina
From November 5-7, 2025, ZEF junior researcher Micely Díaz Espaillat took part in the VI Latin American and Caribbean Congress of Social Sciences, organized by the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences (FLACSO). The congress took place in Buenos Aires, Argentina.  During the event, Ms. Díaz Espaillat presented her research paper titled “The Systematic Exclusion of Haitian Cane Workers from the Pension System in the Dominican Republic.” The abstract of her presentation and photographic documentation are provided below.
Right Livelihood College Workshop 2025
At ZEF Bonn, the Right Livelihood College Workshop 2025 brought together young researchers and global experts working on rural development, smallholder agriculture, and sustainable value chains. Supported by the DAAD German Academic Exchange Service with funds from the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the workshop fostered rich dialogue and collaboration across disciplines and regions.
