November 2023

  • The ZEF Gender Group organized a social-media “hoist the flag” campaign on the occasion of the United Nations “International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women”, which is commemorated annually on November 25. In addition, Tina Beuchelt (ZEF senior researcher and INTERFACES coordinator) organized a special lecture on „Gender-based violence in northern Ghana and the role of traditional leaders in combating it” within the INTERFACES project seminar series on November 28, 2023. The talk was given by Dr. Constance Awinpoka Akurugu, senior lecturer at the SDD University of Business and Integrated Development in WA, Ghana.

  • Peter Asare-Nuamah and Tina Beuchelt (both ZEF senior researchers) organized a sciencepolicy-practice dialogue in Northern Ghana on sustainable land management together with the together with the WASCAL program. This event was part of the INTERFACES project’s aim to develop a Gender Responsive Theory of Change for Sustainable Land Management and to establish a Participatory Learning Platform. Both endeavors strive to strengthen outreach and the implementation of research results, also of partnering research projects, in Northern Ghana. The dialogue took place November 15-16, 2023 at UDS Tamale Campus in Ghana.

  • The ZEF Gender Group organized two public lectures. On November 9, 2023 Natalia Sánchez presented "The Ecological Collapse from a Feminist and Postcolonial standpoint: Perspectives from Colombia" and on November 30, 2023 Julika Holdmann (MA International Affairs University of Toronto | Hertie School) presented "Women negotiating peace a step toward more durable peace? The cases of Colombia and the Philippines".

    • Tina Beuchelt (ZEFc senior researcher) together with Dr. Constance Akurugu (UBIDS, Ghana) organized a cross-continental and cross-university lecture and training series on “Gender in research and implementation processes". This series are taking place within the frame of the INTERFACES project with participants from four BMBF funded research projects working across Africa. The focus is on gender issues in sustainable agriculture/land management, masculinity, norms and power, gender-responsive research and project design in a format of lectures and interactive group discussions. The first session started on July 25, 2023 and further sessions are scheduled for August 1, 8, 15 and 22, 2023 with additional guest lecturers.

    • Dennis L. Avilés-Irahola (ZEFa senior researcher) was invited to give an introductory talk and moderate the workshop "Breaking with Modes of Domination and its Reproduction at the Interdisciplinary Latin America Center (LAZ) in Bonn on July 20, 2023. The workshop was part of LAZ's Third Summer School on "New Feminisms in Latin America".

    • Sundus Saleemi (ZEFb senior researcher) presented a poster at the 31st Annual Conference of the International Association for Feminist Economics (IAFFE) held in Cape Town, South Africa on July 3-5, 2023. The poster displayed her ongoing research on time use being undertaken in three countries in Africa. The collaborative research is carried out with partners at the Makerere University (Uganda), University of Ghana (Ghana), Policy Studies Institute (Ethiopia), and CSIR-STEPRI (Ghana). Hina Amber (ZEFb Junior Researcher) attended the conference, 5-8 July, 2023.

    • The ZEF Gender Group and the Feminist Land Platform organized a public lecture with a panel discussion on „Women’s Land Rights and Gender Transformative Practices“, on June 29, 2023. Sundus Saleemi (ZEFb senior researcher), Dennis Aviles (ZEFa senior researcher), and Tina Beuchelt (ZEFc senior researcher) as well as Eva Youkhana (ZEFa acting director) were involved in the organization, moderation, and as panelists. It was a hybrid event, with simultaneous translation in 4 languages.

    • Hina Amber (ZEFb junior researcher) presented her third chapter on the topic of "Impact of Public and Private Transportation Services on the Female Labor Force Participation in Lahore, Pakistan: A Mixed Method Approach" at two conferences: 1. Armenian Economic Association (AEA) Annual Meeting held at Yerevan, Armenia on June 22-24, 2023 and 2. International Association for Feminist Economics (IAFFE) Annual Conference held at Cape Town, South Africa on July 5-8, 2023.

    • Sundus Saleemi (ZEFb senior researcher) participated in the Summer School on Gender Economics at the Paris School of Economics (PSE). The week-long school was held at the Jourdan Campus in Paris from June 19-23, 2023. The instructors of the school were mostly professors affiliated with universities all across Europe. At the school, the participants were introduced to key topics in the emerging fields. Participants shared their research with the instructors and received feedback. The school was the first Summer School in Gender Economics organized by the Paris School.

    • Between June 12 and 13, 2023 Dennis L. Avilés-Irahola (ZEFa senior researcher) attended the "4th Edition of Global Congress on Gender and Sexuality Studies" in Budapest. She presented "The Buen vivir and decolonial feminism: critical views on Bolivian and Ecuadorian experiences".

    • Sofia Saleem (ZEFa junior researcher from Pakistan) successfully defended her thesis on May 16, 2023. The topic of her thesis is “A case study of gender codes in Urdu textbooks for secondary school education in Punjab, Pakistan”. The commission members were: Prof. Dr. Eva Youkhana (first supervisor) ZEF; Prof. Dr. Jörg Blasius (second supervisor) University Bonn; Prof. Dr. Christoph Antweiler (Chairman) University Bonn; Prof. Dr. Christian Borgemeister (disciplinary member) ZEF.

    • Dennis Avilés-Irahola (ZEFa senior researcher) gave a one-week course on 'Gender and Development from a Feminist Critical Perspective' in Bogotá between May 8 and 12, 2023. The course was part of the Interdisciplinary Course for DSSP doctoral students at the National University of Colombia (UNAL). She also gave a talk on the same topic at the UNAL branch in the city of Manizales on May 13, 2023.

        March 8, 2023: online Gender Group Lecture on “Gender and intersections in Latin America: postcolonial and decolonial approaches” by Dr Renata Guimarães Reynaldo, Professor and Researcher of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and Dr. Michelle Bonatti, lecturer at the Humboldt University of Berlin on Environmental Policy and Sociology;

        March 9, 2023: Public Lecture (in person) on "International Trade and the Environment: Trade- Offs and Synergies" by Prof. Clara Brandi (Head of the Research Programme “Transformation of Economic and Social Systems” at the German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS)) as well as the online event: “Exchange, celebrate, inform”: In celebration of International Women's Day, the City of Bonn will host an event in cooperation with the Network Gender@International Bonn and its new member, ZEF, at the University of Bonn. The event highlights the situation and contributions of women in times of crises and violent conflict.
