  • On November 25, 2024, ZEF ECOL senior researcher Tina Beuchelt organized a large online webinar titled "Combating Gender-based Violence in Northern Ghana’s Rural Areas" to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. The event was a joint effort between the INTERFACES project and ZEF’s Gender Group. Three Ghanaian experts from science, policy, and practice shared their experiences and discussed potential pathways for change. [Recording and blog post available].

  • On October 24, 2024, ZEF ECOL senior researcher Peter Asare-Nuamah led a forecasting workshop on the economic, social, and environmental benefits of microdosing innovation, implemented by one of INTERFACES' partner projects. The event was attended by stakeholders, with digital content creation support from FARA (Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa).

  • On October 22, 2024, ZEF ECOL senior researchers Peter Asare-Nuamah and Tina Beuchelt organized a workshop with INTERFACES Ghana Participatory Learning Platform members in Tamale, Ghana. The session focused on integrating gender perspectives into the co-developed theory of change for sustainable land management. This was followed by a field visit on October 23, where stakeholders observed firsthand the implementation of integrated soil fertility management.

  • At the Committee of World Food Security (CFS52) in Rome, from October 20-23, 2024, ZEF ECON senior researcher Katrin Glatzel moderated a side event on "Strengthening women's agency in agriculture and food systems through the effective uptake of CFS policy products", hosted by Germany’s BMEL, BMZ, Switzerland’s FOAG, CFS CSIPM, and CFS PSM.

  • On October 9-11, 2024, ZEF ECOL senior researcher Tina Beuchelt gave an oral presentation at the ESSA Conference in Passau, Germany. Her talk, titled "From good intentions to implementation: experiences from establishing gender-responsive collective learning approaches towards improving land management in Africa", reflected on practical experiences in integrating gender perspectives into sustainable land management.

September 2024

  • On September 24, 2024, Tina Beuchelt represented ZEF and its Gender Group at the Gender@International Bonn network meeting at Deutsche Welle. Discussions with UN Women, Staatskanzlei NRW, Stadt Bonn, IDOS, and Deutsche Welle focused on future joint gender-related events.

  • On September 11-13, 2024, Tina Beuchelt and Peter Asare-Nuamah (ZEF ECOL senior researchers) participated in the Tropentag Conference in Vienna, which focused on managing natural resources for a better life. A pre-conference workshop, organized by INTERFACES and other regional projects, brought together over 50 participants to discuss best practices for knowledge management regarding sustainable land use in Sub-Saharan Africa.

  • On April 29-30, 2024, Peter Asare-Nuamah co-organized the INTERFACES stakeholder workshop in Parakou in Northern Benin.   • ZEF Gender Group receives Bonn University's Maria von Linden Prize.
    University of Bonn awarded several prizes for research and activities dedicated to gender issues at the University's premises on Friday, April 26, 2024.The Maria von Linden Prize is awarded on a biennial basis to honour extraordinary commitment to the cause of gender equality at the University of Bonn and we are pleased to receive the accolades. We hope to keep up with the honour and focusing on supporting senior and junior researchers in integrating gender perspectives in their research projects. ZEF senior researcher Dr. Eva Youkhana gave the laudatory speech in which she highlighted the Gender Group's activities such as International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on November 25, 2023 and the event about Arab Feminism and Politics on World Women's Day on March 8, 2024. She then raised the issue that women (and children) are always suffering most from armed conflicts and war on the globe, especially in Ukraine, Sudan and Gaza.

  • The ZEF Gender Group and the Bonn Center for Dependency and Slavery Studies (BCDSS) organized a joint event on the occasion of International Women's Day (March 8, 2024). They invited Miriam Cooke, an internationally acclaimed scholar and Braxton Craven Distinguished Professor Emerita of Arab Cultures at Duke University, for a 2-day event at ZEF: A workshop on "Islamic Feminisms and Dependency" at BCDSS on March 7 and a public lecture on "Arab feminism and politics" at ZEF on March 8. The event at ZEF started with a video-screening highlighting the achievements of Egyptian feminist Nawal El Sadawi, followed by Professor Cooke’s lecture. An engaging discussion session followed her presentation.

  • On January 6, 2024, ZEF junior researcher Hina Amber presented her research findings at the ASSA 2024 Annual Meeting at San Antonio, Texas (USA) during a session co-hosted by the International Association for Feminist Economics (IAFFE) and the Association for Social Economics (ASE). The focus of her presentation was on evaluating the influence of public and private transportation services on women's employment in Lahore, Pakistan.   • On January 5-7, 2024, Sundus Saleemi, senior researcher ECON, presented her research on the well-being implications of women’s time use at the annual meeting of the American Economic Association (AEA) and the Allied Social Science Associations (ASSA) in San Antonio, USA. The presentation was part of the session titled “Unpaid Labor: Technology, History and Gender” organized by the International Association for Feminist Economics (IAFFE). Saleemi’s research investigates the relationship between patterns of women’s time use on outcomes such as their well-being, diets and the well-being and diets of their children.
