Urban Citizenship: An Ethnographic Study of Everyday Practices, Resistance and Negotiations in the slum communities of Mumbai
Silenced in waste-to-energy project for the decontaminated city, waste pickers could enrol themselves in tackling issues with the open landfills. With their houses near dumping ground bulldozed for the world-class city, waste pickers & other residents protested to re-build their localities. Sanjay Nagar II (near to the Deonar dumping ground) is about place making taken up by the people, who are officially categorised to evict the city, yet self-plans its unplanned settlements. Overall, the thesis brings out how different imageries of Mumbai interact with each other and how an alternative imagery is created?
