Institutions can be singled out as an important reason why certain societies follow particular trajectories or why so many development policies (such as modernization approaches) failed. Its significant role in development makes institutions an important research topic for ZEF. The main research interest is how and why institutional settings are changing or resilient, particular in the field of local politics, agrarian management and the governance of knowledge.
