About the speaker:

Dr. Talia Vela-Eiden is the Bridge 47 Knowledge Exchange Partnerships Officer at the European Association of Development Research and Training Institutes (Bonn), and a lecturer in Development Politics at the University of Applied Sciences Düsseldorf. She studied law, development studies, and political science, and currently works in the building up of partnerships between civil society and higher education institutions and their contributions to social change in Europe and abroad focusing on SDG 4, Target 4.7, education for sustainable development (ESD) and global citizenship education (GCE).

Abstract:

The presentation addresses the work of the Bridge 47 consortium members and partners for the inclusion of SDG 4, Target 4.7 in European policies, and programs at all levels during the last three years. The meaning of education for sustainable development and global citizenship education in Europe will be addressed along with the implications for the implementation of SDG 4, within the following framework:

• The contexts of the three regional Bridge 47 Knowledge Exchange Partnerships, e.g., Iberian, South Eastern Europe, and Northern Europe,
• The themes emerging from each partnership,
• The way forward after COVID, solidarity and peace in uncertain times.

Questions for discussion:

- How to incorporate the experiences of organizations working in the field of education for development into policies at the European and global levels?

- How about the inequality in access to resources from partners in the Global North and Global South?

- If ESD and GCE are needed more than ever, what is the role of academics in shifting the focus from research to practice?
