Abstract:
The concept of creative cities and sustainable regions (KRAFT), developed by iASK, aims to measure the multidimensional potential of small and medium size cities, generally threatened by depopulation and declining economic activities. Examples from the Western Pannonian region of Hungary, notably the City of Kőszeg prove that through concentrated reactivation of their assets small and medium cities cab revitalize themselves and serve as examples of tradition-based redevelopment, but also that of innovative economic and social models.

Rethinking development paradigms and sustainability is becoming imperative under the prevailing circumstances of the post-COVID “normal”, while the long-lasting war in Ukraine may signal the end of what was hitherto known as globalization. The specter of the emergence of an entire new world order emphasizes the need for interdisciplinary analysis, accounting for the inherent complexities and global implications. The untimely crisis of the European Union accentuates the perceived instability well beyond the European scale and underlines the need for knowledge-based concentrated actions focusing on the essentials.

The Institute of Advanced Studies Kőszeg (iASK) as an interdisciplinary think tank and partner of distinguished scholars, research and higher educational institutions from all around the world addresses these and related challenges, whereby the regional approach is embedded in the national, continental and global contexts,

With its Interdisciplinary Synergy Campus (under construction) iASK can offer excellent facilities for scientific encounters and co-thinking at disciplinary and geographical crossroads of East and West, South and North.

This lecture is co-organized by ZEF and UNU-EHS in Bonn.
