In the Middle East, demographic shifts and fluctuations caused by ongoing conflicts, drought, poverty, and climate change result in mostly uncontrolled urban growth. Urban sprawl spreads into former agricultural lands, waterways are exploited, grey infrastructure as a quick fix is hastily constructed. Most lands are privately owned and act as a monetary security, investment and speculation assets. Private interests prevail over the long-term and farsighted planning and the landscapes and particularly the urban centers are dealing with crises, destruction, lack of coherent planning schemes and scarcity of public open spaces. As landscape architects, how can we incite positive change in such a situation? How can reading the landscape and its users inform us about possibilities of change? This talk will take the audience on a walk through some Jordanian landscapes, unfolding layers of meaning and suggesting ways to addressing improved well-being through open-space planning.

Ms. Julie Weltzien is a landscape architect with a degree from Hannover University (studied also at TU Berlin, Edinburgh University and internships in Florence). She has worked as a landscape architect in Berlin. She also served as a faculty member (Lecturer/Assistant Professor) for 10 years at the American University of Beirut/Lebanon. In 2014 she Joined GIZ Jordan and was a Project Manager for the Improvement of Green Infrastructure in Jordan through Labor Intensive Measures, funded by the Special Initiative on Forced Displacement, the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), and the Ministry of Environment, Jordan. Currently, she works as a Project Manager for forest Landscape Restoration and Food Security in Afghanistan (Based in Bonn).
