This week's "Alternative Wednesday" will remind us of the consequences of the ever increasing demand in gold. The double feature screening of two short documentaries by Aljazeera will be shown on Wednesday, October 10.

Gold fever is sweeping across South America and is at its most lethal in Colombia where it is fuelling the civil war. Turf wars are erupting between paramilitaries and leftist rebel groups who are fighting to take control of mining regions. It is fuelling an old ideological conflict that has displaced thousands of people. Helicopter raids by the Colombian army on small community mining collectives have become commonplace and the Colombian government is accused of targeting poor workers to protect big business interests and committing human rights violations with impunity.

Ghana is the second-largest producer of gold on the continent and is now home to a large network of gold fraudsters. Investors have lost millions at their hands. In this investigation, we go undercover to lift the lid on this illusory pot of gold.
