BACKGROUND:

Carbon Farming has been heralded as a powerful approach to transform agricultural landscapes into carbon sinks at global scale. However, many carbon farming techniques are knowledge-intensive or require new technologies to be adopted at relevant geographic scales, whereas others imply economic or environmental trade-offs and thus require appropriate incentive schemes. Global carbon markets could become an important source of finance for promising models of carbon agriculture, but tapping this potential comes with technical, economic, political, and ethical challenges:

• What are the scientific and technical requirements for reliable monitoring, reporting, and verification of additional emission reductions from carbon farming?
• What kind of different approaches and metrics are needed for agriculture and livestock in tropical and temperate climate zones?
• What kind of incentives, regulatory frameworks, and support structures are needed for farmers to engage in carbon agriculture?
• Under what conditions, can carbon markets become an economically and politically viable as well as ethically sound finance instrument for carbon agriculture?

These are some of the issues we will discuss with our panelists.
