Abstract

In the Middle East, demographic shifts and fluctuations caused by ongoing conflicts, drought, poverty, and climate change result in mostly uncontrolled urban growth. Urban sprawl spreads into former agricultural lands, waterways are exploited, grey infrastructure as a quick fix is hastily constructed. Most lands are privately owned and act as a monetary security, investment and speculation assets. Private interests prevail over the long-term and farsighted planning and the landscapes and particularly the urban centers are dealing with crises, destruction, lack of coherent planning schemes and scarcity of public open spaces. As landscape architects, how can we incite positive change in such a situation? How can reading the landscape and its users inform us about possibilities of change? This talk will take the audience on a walk through some Jordanian landscapes, unfolding layers of meaning and suggesting ways to addressing improved well-being through open-space planning.
