From (Ex-) Mayor to Mayor
December 17, 2009. 

Nana Ato Arthur, a ZEF PhD student from Ghana, has paid a visit to the recently elected Mayor of Bonn, Jürgen Nimptsch, on December 16, 2009. Mr. Arthur has been Mayor of Elmina, a city in Ghana near Cape Coast from 2001-2005. He visited Bonn in this capacity last year during the COP 9 (Conference of the Parties) on Biodiversity. At the moment, he is doing PhD research on the "Capacity of the public sector for development: The case of local government in the Central Region of Ghana".

"Waiting for the water to come? Combating poverty in times of climate change"
December 09, 2009. 

is the title of a study co-published by ZEF on the impact of climate change on poverty and livelihoods in developing countries. The publication is being jointly published with CARE Germany-Luxemburg. ZEF researchers wrote the scientific part and the case study on Indonesia, for which field research was being carried out.

Oded Stark appointed Presidential Professor by President of Poland
November 03, 2009. 

Oded Stark, a Senior Fellow at ZEF's Department of Economic and Technological Change, was appointed a Presidential Professor of Economic Sciences, the Republic of Poland by its President in October 2009. This is the highest honor that Poland can bestow on an academic. The date of the ceremony at the Presidential Palace is yet to be decided.

High ranking visitors from Banda Aceh at ZEF

A government's delegation from Banda Aceh, Indonesia, has visited ZEF on November 2, 2009 and discussed possible collaborations in the area of capacity development in the aftermath of the Tsunami. Good modeling: Uzbek agro-economist wins prize for best thesis
October 21, 2009. 

Ihtiyor Bobojonov is the winner of this year´s ZEF Friends prize for the best doctoral thesis written at ZEF between January 2007 and May 2009. Mr. Bobojonov was awarded the prize by Alexander Graf York von Wartenburg from the Friends of ZEF on the occasion of the ten year anniversary conference of ZEF's graduate program BiGS-DR.

ZEF students visit practitioners in Development Cooperation

As part of their practice oriented doctoral studies at ZEF, a group of graduate students visited three Bonn based policy institutions in the field of development cooperation: The German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ) and the Church Development Service (EED). They were informed and had an opportunity to exchange views and experiences about German and international Development Cooperation.

ZEF co-organizes training workshop in Uzbekistan on Challenges of sustainable water use in arid and semi-arid regions under conditions of climate change
September 03, 2009. 

The international workshop will take place in Tashkent and Urgench from September 28 until October 1 2009 and is being funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

Participants from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Germany, India, Iran, Kuwait, Jordan, Oman, Yemen, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan will prepare and

present their country reports relevant to the main theme of the workshop.

Ten Years of International Graduate Training at ZEF: Capacity Development for the Developing World

International Conference at ZEF in Bonn from October 1-2 2009

 

The Bonn Interdisciplinary Graduate School for Development Research (BiGS-DR) of the Center for Development Research (ZEF) at Bonn University was founded in 1999. It was one of first graduate programs for development research in Germany. During the last decade, 433 young scientists from 77 countries have participated in the Graduate Program.

ZEF's Coffee Project (CoCE) at International Coffee Trade Fair
July 14, 2009. 

On June 26-28 2009, the ZEF CoCE project participated at the Coffeena International Speciality Coffee Trade Fair, at Kölnmesse, Cologne. The Coffeena trade fair is annually organized by the Speciality Coffee Association of Europe bringing together coffee professionals from all over the world. The CoCE team held a speech about the importance and challenges of the sustainable use and conservation of forest coffee in Ethiopia.

STRIVER Workshop in Hyderabad, India
July 10, 2009. 

ZEF is a partner in the European Commission funded research project called STRIVER (Strategy and methodology for improved IWRM - An integrated interdisciplinary assessment in four twinning basins). Within the scope of the project the workshop "Changes in water governance in Tungabhadra and Krishna: the longer view" took place on June 30 2009 in Hyderabad, India, organized by ZEF in collaboration with SaciWATERs, Hyderabad, India.
