Economics of next generation innovations in food and agriculture

Innovations are changing the economic and social context of agriculture. Agricultural economists are challenged to address these with new interdisciplinary concepts and models based on sound understanding of the emerging innovations. This topic of emerging innovations was the focus of the Session organized by Joachim von Braun, ZEF Director, during the 30^th International Conference of Agricultural Economists in Vancouver, Canada, on 29 July 2018.

The session identified the implications of emerging innovations on farming communities and consumers, and looked into the medium run future (next two decades). The speakers highlighted economic implications of next generation technological and institutional innovations in food and agriculture, especially digital and biological innovations and their combinations and related applications with big data based analyses, precision farming, new forms of mechanization, rural solar energy systems, indoor agriculture, as well as related policy innovations.
