Obituary: ZEF Senior Fellow Professor Rashid Hassan
ZEF-Senior Fellow Professor Rashid Hassan passed away in Khartoum, Sudan, on June 4, 2023. He was one of Africa’s leading environmental economists.
His most recent professional affiliations were Emeritus Professor at the University of Pretoria, South Africa, and Secretary General of the Environment Agency of Sudan.
A few weeks ago, in May 2023, Professor Hassan was still joining the workshop “Food and Humanitarian Crises” at the Pontifical Academy in the Vatican, Rome, at the invitation of the Academy’s President, ZEF distinguished Professor Joachim von Braun.
He will be dearly missed.
About Professor Hassan:
Rashid Hassan was born in Karima, Sudan, in 1953. He obtained a BSc (1977) and an MSc (1982) degree in agricultural economics from the University of Khartoum, Sudan, added by an MSc (1988) and a PhD (1989) degree in economics from Iowa State University, USA.
He served as a Professor and founding Director of the Centre for Environmental Economics and Policy in Africa (CEEPA), University of Pretoria (1997-2016) after working with CSIR in South Africa (1995-1997), The International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre (CIMMYT) in East Africa (1989-1995), and the University of Juba, Sudan (1983-1984).
He also was a Foreign Associate Member of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA (2019-2023) and had been: Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences since 2018;
Research Fellow of the Economic Research Forum (ERF), Cairo, since 2016;
Senior Fellow of ZEF, Bonn University, Germany since 2010;
Fellow of the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) since 2009;
Distinguished Fellow of the African Association of Agricultural Economics since 2008; Member of Academy of Sciences of South Africa since 2005.
He served as a member of many national and international Boards and Science Councils including: The UN Committee for Development Policy, The Consultative Group of International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) Science Council, Global Environment Facility (GEF) Science and Technical Advisory Panel, Science Panel and Working Group Co-Chair of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, High Level Panel of Experts on Food Security and Climate Change of the UN Committee of Food Security, Academic Advisory Panel for the World Development Report (WDR 2009) on climate change, Stockholm Resilience Centre Board, Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) Science Advisory Council, Human Sciences Research Council of SA Board, Founding Chief Editor of the African Journal of Agricultural and Resource Economics,.
He was also an associate editor and member of editorial Boards of many international journals and has published over 170 articles in international scientific journal and chapters and 14 books.
