POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT Director General
The World Vegetable Center is seeking a new Director General for appointment by April
2008. The Center is an internationally funded, autonomous, nonprofit research and
development organization headquartered in Taiwan with regional centers in Thailand, India
and Tanzania, sub-regional offices in Uzbekistan, Syria and Mali, and national or project
offices in six other countries across Asia and Africa. The Center has a global mandate and
an annual budget of about US million. Its mission is to conduct research and
development leading to the alleviation of poverty and malnutrition in the developing world
through increased production and consumption of safe vegetables, especially for those living
on less than two dollars per day.
Initially focused on Asia, the Center is now the leading vegetable research and development
organization for the developing world. Its activities are conducted in partnership with the
private sector, national agricultural research systems, CGIAR and non-CGIAR international
agricultural research centers, advanced research institutes, universities and non-
governmental organizations. Over the last five years the Center has been in a phase of
renewal which has included the renovation of its headquarters´ laboratories, administrative
offices and housing. Its research and development work has also been refocused into five
major themes covering germplasm conservation, genetic enhancement, seed and safe
vegetable production, post-harvest management and human nutrition.
Globally, the Director General is responsible for providing strategic vision leadership and
overall management for more than 50 internationally-recruited staff and about 300 nationally-
recruited staff. He or she must understand and be able to articulate global research and
development needs. This will ensure that scientists are motivated to deliver global public
goods and that the funding agencies of developed and developing countries, foundations,
trusts and other donor organizations continue to support the Center´s operations. The
Director General is also responsible for creating and ensuring the successful implementation
and outcome of projects and initiatives such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation-funded
vBSS Project, the Global Horticulture Initiative, and CIMBAA - Collaboration on Insect
Management for Brassicas in Asia and Africa. The Director General reports to a multi-
national Board of Directors composed of members representing countries that participate in
and make financial contributions to the Center and major financing agencies which contribute
to the Center.
The position requires a highly experienced professional who has a good combination of the
following qualities:
· A Ph.D. or equivalent in an agriculturally-related biological or social sciences
discipline and extensive knowledge of agriculture in the developing world, including the
vegetable sector;
· An established international reputation in the management of a scientific research
unit or institution, especially the vision, good judgment, and ability to inspire and lead a multi-
disciplinary, multi-national, multi-ethnic team of highly qualified scientists;
· Demonstrated ability to raise financial, technical and political support for innovative
research and development programs;
· Experience and skills in intellectual property rights, appropriate utilization of
biotechnology, and application of modern information and communications technologies;
· Effective communication skills in written and spoken English, with additional
language skills desirable;
· Diplomatic sensitivity and a keen awareness of global affairs;
· Willingness to travel extensively throughout the world, often under demanding
conditions.
The salary and benefits package for the Director General is attractive, managed through
AIARC, and comparable with those of similar international institutions. The Director

As convener of the System-wide Livestock Progamme (SLP), ILRI seeks to
recruit a coordinator to be based at the SLP coordination office at ILRI's
principal site in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. * The coordinator will provide
intellectual leadership to the SLP and drive the strategic planning of the
programme, working in close collaboration with the steering committee (the
Livestock Programme Group - LPG) which comprises of representatives of all
partner CGIAR centres. * Leading fund raising for the programme (including
engagement with the donor community) and coordinating calls for proposals,
their evaluation, and management will be led by the incumbent, working
closely with the LPG, ILRI management and scientists. * The coordinator
will facilitate the implementation of funded projects, monitor their
progress and where appropriate to their own expertise, contribute to the
research outputs. * Duties will also include general programme management
- preparation of medium term plan, work plans, budgets as well as

EU project "Soil conservation and policy measures: the case studies (SoCo-CS)". The

The Leibniz Institute of Agricultural Development in Central and Eastern Europe (IAMO) is
looking for Post-Docs and PhD candidates to join its research team on Economic dynamics
and social equilibrium in rural China. This project aims at a more comprehensive and
coordinated analysis of the dynamics of agricultural developments, and socio-economic and
ecological processes in China´s rural areas, and it will endeavour to provide possible
solutions to pressing development deficits. More specifically, three key areas of research
have been identified.

Job Requirements
· Developing a research strategy for sustainable range management and irrigated
forages. The research will be conducted in close partnership with the National Agricultural
Research Systems (NARS) and with the active participation of rangeland users and other
stakeholders (extension services, policy makers, development institutions) in the Arabian
Peninsula, to meet the identified needs for sustainable production through efficient and
effective use of natural resources.
· Managing and implementing the activities of the AP project relating to rangeland and
irrigated forages.
· Promote the utilization of indigenous and exotic species including spineless cactus
for forage production and rangeland rehabilitation through personal research and support to
the national research activities.
· Conduct research at sites in the Arabian Peninsula, working primarily with national
scientists, and supported, where necessary, by other ICARDA scientists
· Day-to-day management of related research activities, liaising with national partners
in each of the seven Arabian Peninsula countries
· Assessing the status, constraints and potentials of the production base, considering
the interactions among vegetation, livestock, and crops, as well as the implication of the
institutional policy and property rights issues.
· Assessing the status, constraints and potentials of other goods and services
provided by rangelands (carbon sequestration, biodiversity, eco-tourism, etc).
· Be kept abreast with / and use advanced tools (e.g. GIS, modeling, expert systems,
decision support tools) for designing and conducting research projects addressing the
problems facing sustainable use of the rangelands in the Arabian Peninsula (climate change,
urbanization, population increase)
· Publishing research results in peer-reviewed journals, and preparing reports, training
materials, and other documents.
· Developing and contributing to the project activities in strengthening national
institutional and human resource capacity through training, regional networking,
workshops/conferences and information dissemination to end-users.
· Supervising, training, assisting and assessing, as appropriate, visiting scientists,
postdoctoral fellows, degree students, research assistants, and other technical support
staff.
· Assisting in the preparation of special project proposals for external funding.
Qualifications and Experience
· Earned PhD in range sciences, ecology or a related discipline, with a minimum of 5
years professional experience in dry areas rangeland rehabilitation and management
research. A record of post-doctoral research fellowship would be an asset

· Perform association analysis of a barley reference collection

The PhD researcher will study the economic and socio-political dynamics of emerging
regional agricultural service organizations (farmer associations, machine/tractor parks, rural
banks and commodity exchange) in the context of a political economy in `transition´. The
practical aim of the research is to provide concepts for institutional re-organization.
Tasks:
- Conduct PhD research (shorter or longer fieldwork period in all project years)
- Actively participate in project activities
Start and duration:
From 1 February 2008, for three-four years, including project-related tasks other than the
PhD research.
Duty station:
- During fieldwork: Khorezm province, Uzbekistan
- Otherwise: Bonn, Germany
Requirements:
- Relevant Masters degree in (development) economics, new institutional economics,
sociology or political science (preferably including topics like rural service providing
organisations, policy analysis, rural development, etc.)
- Previous experience in Uzbekistan and/or the Central Asian region preferred
- Excellent writing skills in English
- Uzbek and/or Russian language skills are a recommendation
- Good team member

Development Research, University of Bonn, Germany together with the German Remote
Sensing Data Center (DFD) of the German Aerospace Center (DLR), Germany invites
applications for the following position of a
PhD Student
for the third phase of the ZEF/UNESCO research project "Economic and Ecological
Restructuring of Land- and Water Use in the Region Khorezm (Uzbekistan)".
The ZEF/UNESCO Khorezm project is an interdisciplinary pilot project in development
research. The main objectives are 1) to develop concepts for an effective and ecologically
sustainable use of land and water for intensively used agricultural regions in the Aral Sea
basin; 2) to establish scientific collaboration based on a close partnership between Germany
and Uzbekistan in the field of development research.
For this project the position of a PhD student is vacant to perform research on 'Seasonal crop
growth assessment and yield prediction at regional scale'. The study will involve establishing
and validating algorithms for upscaling and regionalizing crop growth and yield information by
integrating remote sensing and field data into crop growth models. Therefore multi- and
hyperspectral time-series of satellite imageries at very high to medium spatial resolution will
be acquired in addition to the collection of plant and soil data and information on crop and
water management in researcher and farmer managed fields. The regional crop yield model
will be used for evaluating cropping systems performance.
Tasks:
· Supervision of management operations in fertilizer trials for cotton, winter-wheat and
rice
· Monitoring of plant and soil parameters in fertilizer trials and farmers´ fields
· Preprocessing and analysis of satellite image time-series data for retrieving of crop
canopy variables
· Integrating canopy variables into crop growth models
· Interviewing farmers on crop and water management
· Validating modeled crop growth and yield information
· Simulating crop growth and yield at regional scale by the established models
· Evaluating cropping systems performance
Requirements:
· MSc in agronomy, biology, geography, computer science, soil science, or equivalent
· Experience in remote sensing of vegetation
· Sound knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
· Experience in field work in rural areas preferably of crop and soil management
· Experience with supervision/management of field trials and field measurements
· Fluency in English
· Willingness to stay in Uzbekistan for conducting field work during the crop growing
seasons in 2008/9
Desired requirements:
· Experience in satellite image time-series analysis and programming
· Experience with agricultural crops and their management (esp. cotton, winter-wheat,
rice)
· An ability to communicate in Russian or Uzbek would be advantageous.
Start:
February 2008 for 3.5 years
The PhD student will be partly based at the project institute in Uzbekistan and also at DLR in
Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany. The student will work under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Paul
Vlek (Professor at the University of Bonn and Director of ZEF c). The position is full time

The International Potato Center (CIP) is seeking an economist / agricultural economist with
skills and experience in technology adoption studies, research priority setting and impact
assessment. The candidate should be committed to using research for development in a
complex cooperative environment of research and development partners. CIP seeks diversity

The Center: CIP is a not-for-profit international agricultural research organization with a
global mandate to conduct research on potatoes and sweetpotatoes, sustainable

particular those goals that relate to poverty, hunger, child and maternal mortality, and

will: develop improved methods for impact targeting and needs/opportunities assessment;
adopt and validate a broader conceptual framework for promoting agricultural innovation and
assessing impact; identify impact indicators and methodologies for measuring and monitoring
these indicators; and develop strategies and tactics to add value to CIP's commodity
research. It will assist the center position itself to participate in national, regional and
international innovation systems.
The successful candidate will:
· be an accomplished and innovative researcher with at least five years of strong
research experience in adoption studies, priority setting and impact assessment;
· have a PhD in Economics or Agricultural Economics
· have demonstrated success in working with multi-disciplinary teams and
partnerships
· have a strong international publication record
· be fluent English and either conversant in Spanish, or with demonstrated language
learning skills, as part of the work will be evaluating the impact of a range of participatory
initiatives in Latin America
Conditions: The employment contract will be for an initial three-year term with the possibility
