To strengthen our capacity in social sciences related to Natural Resource Management, we

Senior lecturer/scientist in social sciences (80 - 100 %)
In a multi-disciplinary team, you will design learning elements in the context of a program of
Problem-Based-Learning in international agriculture (developing and transition countries) and
participate in respective coaching. You will develop and deliver teaching modules in the MSc
course "agriculture and forestry in transition". You will supervise or backstop thesis work of
students (BSc and MSc), especially related to social science issues and methodology.
You will support SHL's research and development activities, conduct your own field research
in international agriculture and collaborate in mandates related to agricultural research for
development, covering the social science aspects.
Ideally, you possess:
- a PhD in sociology or anthropology
- a track record of working in multi-disciplinary teams in applied research or
development
- working experience in agriculture or related fields in low-income countries
- interest in teaching and experimenting with innovative learning models

In a multi-disciplinary team, you will design learning elements in the context of a program of
Problem-Based-Learning in international agriculture (developing and transition countries) and
participate in respective coaching. You will develop and deliver teaching modules and
supervise thesis work of students in the BSc and MSc courses, covering the aspects of rural
development and development policy (development theories, international organizations
etc.).
You will coordinate and further strengthen the Center of Competence on international
agriculture within SHL, bundling the existing expertise (presently about 30 staff involved in
research for development in developing and transition countries). You will head SHL's service
for knowledge management on natural resources in international cooperation and you will be
in charge of acquisition of mandates.
Ideally, you possess:
- a PhD, preferably in agricultural economy
- working experience in development cooperation or in the private sector in developing
countries
- a track record of work and research in rural development (livelihood approach,
public-private partnerships, value chain management, policy dialogue)
- experience in organization development, project cycle management and team

You will lead an applied R&D program aiming at the holistic assessment and improvement of
the sustainability of agricultural production ('Response-Inducing Sustainability Evaluation',
RISE). You will develop and implement RISE projects and ensure their funding to further
improve the RISE tool and spread its application. You will bring together and coordinate SHL
internal and external expertise in the domain of sustainable agricultural production and
forestry. You will collaborate in other research and development activities, conduct your own
field research in Switzerland and abroad and collaborate in mandates related to agricultural
R&D.
With your expertise and experience you will enrich SHL's educational program by developing
and delivering teaching modules for BSc and MSc courses in the fields of ecology,
sustainable resources management and international agriculture. Your national and
international project work will allow students to undertake professional training and provide
the basis for BSc and MSc theses you will supervise.
Ideally, you have the following qualifications and skills:

The position: ILRI seeks to recruit a Post Doctoral Feed Scientist to join a new regional
project on "East Africa
Dairy Development" operating in Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda. The main components of the
project include: a) an
evaluation of constraints and opportunities for commercializing smallholder dairy production,
b) the testing and
evaluation of alternative marketing and input delivery systems, including those related to
feed, c) and an evaluation
of the impacts of market-led technology change at various levels. The feed specialist will
participate in the design and
implementation of feed related field activities in each of the three countries. In particular, s/he
would lead the feed
inventory work and the evaluation of alternative feed dissemination approaches that will then
be tested by the
project team. S/he would further contribute to the partnerships and communications activities
needed to ensure
that the project is conducted effectively and achieves its objectives.
Location: Nairobi, Kenya.
The successful candidate will have:
o A Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics, Sociology, Anthropology or other related fields, obtained
within the last 3
years. A biophysical scientist (e.g., animal nutritionist, feed evaluation) with strong social
science skills would also
be considered for this position;
o Experience with primary data and survey design in developing countries, including both
quantitative and
qualitative methods;
o Experience of working in multi-cultural teams, in a developing country setting;
o Experience in participatory approaches and understanding of innovation systems
approaches would be an
advantage.
o Strong English language skills, both written and spoken, with a demonstrated record of
publications in

developing countries. By working with its diverse partners and the Future Harvest Centers

is creating innovative approaches to translate natural resource management research into
actionable recommendations for policy makers, resource managers and poor rural

IWMI seeks a post-doctoral research fellow to contribute in the economic analyses of water
and land resources development and management, and especially on issues aimed at
increasing water productivity, groundwater management in South Asia, and smallholder´s
irrigation practices. The incumbent will work primarily on IWMI´s bench mark River Basins in
India, under the guidance of the Head-IWMI India and Nepal Offices. The position will be
based in IWMI´s South Asia Regional office in New Delhi, India/Headquarters at Colombo, Sri

Duties and Responsibilities Under the guidance of the senior research staff at IWMI, the Post
Doctoral Fellow will contribute to the research agenda on the use of economic instruments
and incentives for water management, especially on issues relating to water productivity,
groundwater management, and smallholder irrigation management. This will include the
following:
· Implement studies on economic aspects of water resources development and
management, especially the potential role that economic instruments can play in groundwater
demand management and addressing the economic problems of the small holder in informal
irrigation management.
· Perform field studies on various agricultural water management technologies to
understand their socio-economic impact, and factors that lead to adoption of the
technologies.
· Perform economic analyses for the study on water allocation and water productivity
in IWMI´s bench mark basins.
· Prepare research reports, journal articles, seminar papers and other scientific
manuscripts for the dissemination of research results.
· Produce internationally peer-reviewed and other publications and disseminate
findings by attending international forums and through other outlets.
Skills & Abilities
· Strong analytical mind, ability to synthesize information, and ability to write
persuasively
· Strong technical background in quantitative research methods and data analysis
· Familiarity with the application of spatial statistics will be an added advantage
· Broad understanding of agriculture, water productivity issues in the context of rural
livelihoods in South Asia.
· The ability to work harmoniously in interdisciplinary and multicultural teams
· Proficiency in English - both oral and written; skills in other international or regional

· Willingness to spend long periods in the field

To further this mandate, IWMI requires a highly competent and motivated individual for the
position of Post Doctoral Fellow - Hydrology. The successful candidate will be based in
IWMI´s Regional Office for South East Asia, Penang, Malaysia.
The incumbent, under the overall guidance of the Senior Hydrologist, will be involved in a
rapidly developing climate change program at IWMI. The Mekong basin with over 300 million
people, are dependent on water resources for food and fibre, industry and urban use. As
countries in the Mekong basin move towards the development of their water resources, that
includes hydropower and irrigation development, there are challenges associated with
climate change along with potential negative impacts associated with changed flow regimes.
Dealing with climate change is regarded as one of the greatest challenges for the coming
decade. Changes in precipitation are likely to have a major impact on the hydrological cycle
and subsequently on the environment and food production.
Duties and Responsibilities
The incumbent will conduct research into hydrological aspects of climate change in the
context of different development scenarios (i.e. hydropower, irrigation) within the Mekong
Basin. Specific duties will include:
· Develop and apply tools for hydrological analysis with respect to climate variability
and climate change at the basin/regional scale, that includes drought and flood occurrence
and extremity as well as the impact of contrasting infrastructure development ;
· Assess the impact of changed flow regimes associated with infrastructure
development within the context of an e-flow´s framework;
· Apply hydrological, hydrodynamic, water quality and water management models for
analyzing the impacts of climate change on water resources at the basin/regional level in the
context of different development scenarios;
· Develop appropriate scientifically based management strategies to deal with climate
variability and climate change;
· Incorporate climate change into the development scenarios developed by
regional/national collaborating institutes;
· Prepare research reports, journal articles, seminar papers and other scientific
manuscripts for the dissemination of research results.
Skills & Abilities
The position will require occasional international travel to collaborating institutions such as
Mekong River Commission and our National Partners in the Lower Mekong. The skills and
abilities of the incumbent should include the following:
· Knowledge of hydrological processes and methods for their quantification with an
emphasis on hydrological regionalization.
· An understanding of climatology, hydrology, tools and methods for climate variability
and climate change analysis.
· Understanding of the multidisciplinary nature of climate change and ability to
assemble and analyze planning data from different disciplines including hydrology,
meteorology, agriculture, hydropower, fisheries and economics.
· Experience with hydrological, hydrodynamic and water management modeling.
· Analytical mind and a learning attitude.
· Fluency in both spoken and written English.
· Demonstrated ability to prepare project documents, research publications, etc.

IWMI requires a highly competent and motivated individual for the position of Postdoctoral
Fellow - Political Ecology. The successful candidate will be based in IWMI´s sub-Regional
Office for South East Asia, Hanoi, Vietnam.
Devising and implementing institutional systems that enable and support sustainable and
equitable water management is particularly crucial in Southeast Asia as competition for water
between different user groups and sectors of the economy increase. There has been a
significant move towards institutional change in the water sector as the potential for
infrastructure development diminishes. This new approach encompasses the principles of
integrated water basin management (IWBM) and the allocation of water rights to individuals
or communities. A shortcoming of past State initiatives in water management has been the
application of a `blueprint´ approach to water resources management without taking into
account the diversity of biophysical conditions, attributes of the communities and existing
institutions. In particular, the transfer of IWBM models from developed to developing
countries has been challenged as potentially in appropriate.
Duties and Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Senior Economist and Principal Social Scientist, the incumbent
will conduct research into changes in water resources management in the Mekong Basin.
Specific duties will include:
· Understand existing water rights systems within the Mekong and
equalities/inequalities among Mekong countries with respect to water resources.
· Undertake case studies on the allocation and negotiation of water rights in the
Mekong River Basin.
· Explore new systems of water governance combining existing local community
institutions with state support at the catchment level.
· Identify and design tools and mechanisms necessary for water rights allocation to
assist communities in solving water management conflicts and to secure fair, equitable and
sustainable access to water beyond the community scale level.
· Develop a framework designed to perform an institutional analysis of water
governance systems at the catchment level.
· Undertake an analysis of the incentives and constraints of state and non-state actors
at multiple hydrological and administrative levels to make water rights allocation an efficient
instrument for sustainable and equitable water management, located within different political,
economic and biophysical contexts.
· Contribute to informing policymakers and relevant organizations/parties in the
Mekong.
Skills & Abilities
· Familiar with the concepts and tools required to undertake institutional analysis;
· An understanding and familiarity with the concept of polycentricity.
· Exposure and competence in the area of institutional change within an economic and
political context that uses a political ecology as an analytical tool.
· Demonstrated ability to prepare project documents and research publications.
· Strong interpersonal skills and ability to establish and maintain effective working
relations with people in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect
for diversity.
· Good communication and writing skills, with a good command of both oral and

eco-hydrology, carbon and water cycling, biometeorology, and broad knowledge of
ecosystem science.
· Computer literacy, with database and GIS skills.
· A record of peer-reviewed publications in the field of political ecology preferably
within the Mekong basin.
· Previous working experience in developing countries is an advantage.

Skills & Abilities
· Knowledge of climate change related research in hydrology and water resources
management, literature and internet sources of climate change related data and information
· Familiarity with GCM and RCM principles, limitations, outputs and use of their
downscaled outputs as inputs into hydrological studies.
· Knowledge of hydrological processes, hydrological modeling and time series
analyses, statistical packages, uncertainty and risk analyses
· Knowledge of ARC GIS and Remote Sensing analyses and tools an advantage.
· Ability to effectively establish priorities, plan, organize and monitor own work in a
multiple tasks environment.
· Strong interpersonal skills and ability to establish and maintain effective working

POST DOCTORAL FELLOW - AGRICULTURAL HYDROLOGIST (West Africa)
The International Water Management Institute (IWMI), based in Colombo, Sri Lanka,
conducts research and capacity building activities related to water and land management,
with the goal of improving food security, livelihoods, and the natural environment in
developing countries. By working with its diverse partners and the Future Harvest Centers
supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), IWMI
is creating innovative approaches to translate natural resource management research into
actionable recommendations for policy makers, resource managers and poor rural
communities.
IWMI requires a highly competent and motivated individual for the position of Post Doctoral
Fellow - Agricultural Hydrologist. The successful candidate will be based in the IWMI Ghana
or Addis Ababa Office.
Duties and Responsibilities
Under the supervision of David Molden, DDG Research, and Vladimir Smakhtin, Principal
Hydrologist, the Post Doctoral Fellow will participate in the on-going project focused on land
and water use implications of changing land use and climate change. Detailed spatial
characterization of land use and global climate is currently being used as the basis for
spatially explicit estimates of changes in water use driven by land use change, through
development of a suite of integrated geospatial layers for biological process modeling at high
resolution global scale. The Post Doctoral Fellow will continue this work integrating (and
generating) additional spatially explicit data sets and developing tools that will be used to
explore the factors and mechanisms that affect water use through land use and climate
change. This project contributes to IWMI´s emerging global research agenda, looking beyond
basin and discipline boundaries at drivers of water use often not considered within the realm
of water management.
Duties and responsibilities
· Providing expertise in hydrology and agricultural water management
· The Post Doctoral Fellow will work in inter-disciplinary teams in projects that will
consider the impact of additional water storage on basin hydrology, the downstream and
groundwater impacts of various agricultural interventions, and implications for agricultural
water management under climate change scenarios.
· Project work will require extensive field work, measurements, analysis, and
modeling, working in interdisciplinary teams, and with local partners, and
· Preparation of research reports, journal articles, seminar papers and other scientific
manuscripts for the dissemination of research results.
Qualifications and Experience
· A Ph.D in Hydrology, Hydrogeology or Groundwater Hydrology, Water Resources
Management or related discipline.
· Experience in agricultural water use and management.
· Experience in hydrological modeling, crop modeling and eco-hydrological analysis
· Competence in quantitative applied research methods, and strong quantitative and
analytical skills.
· Good communication and writing skills, with a good command of both oral and
written English
· Computer literacy, with spatial modeling, programming, database, and RS/ GIS
skills.
· Demonstrated ability to prepare project documents and research publications. A
record of relevant peer-reviewed publications is a major advantage.
