Faculty Positions in the

The School of Global Studies

 

 

The School of Global Studies, a major new initiative at

Arizona State University, will be making four

assistant/associate professor appointments; two at each

rank. The School will be transdisciplinary, cutting across

the social sciences, natural sciences and humanities;

encourage rethinking of how we understand the world

institutionally, socially and politically; encourage

imaginative, innovative and rigorous scholarship, and find

ways to more effectively bring our intellects and academic

knowledge to address global challenges. The School is

organized around seven intersecting thematic areas:

 

1) Governance: Institutions and Participation, 2) Health

and Well-being, 3) Migration, Borders and Identities,

4) Natural Resources, Urban Systems and Development,

5) Industries of Globalization: Trade in Information

Technologies, Media, and Communication, 6) Circulation of

Art, Culture, and Intellectual Property, 7) Violence:

Individuals will be expected to conduct interdisciplinary

research leading to publication, participate in independent

or collaborative research grant applications, teach both

graduate/undergraduate courses, and perform university and

professional service appropriate to rank. Salaries at

respective ranks are highly competitive with significant

start-up funds.

 

 

ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR:

 

Required: Ph.D. in a relevant discipline; demonstrated

excellence in research, teaching, and public and/or

academic service; a record of externally funded projects

together with a current portfolio of such projects;

demonstrated interest in working across disciplinary

boundaries and in multidisciplinary teams; and scholarly

and research focus in one of the thematic areas of the

School together with the ability to contribute to at least

one other thematic area.

Desired: evidence of innovative teaching approaches;

experience with outcomes oriented projects; a focus in the

Governance or Migration areas of the School together with

the ability to bridge across one or more other thematic

areas.

 

 

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR:

 

Required: a Ph.D. in a relevant discipline by date of

appointment; evidence of a very promising research agenda

and early contributions to a field of inquiry with evidence

of potential for significant external funding; teaching

experience; a focus in the Governance or Migration areas of

the School together with the ability to bridge across one

or more other thematic areas as described above.

Desired: current funded research; evidence of innovative

teaching approaches; and experience with outcomes oriented

projects.

Penn State Capital College, Harrisburg Campus, invites

Tenure Track Appointment. Starting Date is Fall 2005, if

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in micro- and

macro-economics and international finance. Ability to teach

in any of the following secondary fields would be highly

desirable: operations management, statistics, research

methods, or other specialty. Pursue scholarly research and

publications in refereed journals. Participate in the

continued development of the curriculum at the graduate and

undergraduate levels. The position's primary

responsibilities are located at the Harrisburg campus with

possible teaching assignments at the Schuylkill Haven

campus.

 

 

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

 

It is expected that candidates will have an earned

doctorate in Economics. ABDs who expect to earn their

doctoral degree by Fall 2005 will also be considered.

The Pennsylvania State University is one of the nation's

leading publicly supported universities. Its Capital

College, with campuses at Middletown and Schuylkill Haven

and two centers in Harrisburg, has an enrollment of over

4,500 students, many of whom are non-traditional. The

College is easily accessible via interstate highways from

Policy Studies invites nominations and applications for a

distinguished senior scholar in the study of the American

workplace, the W. J. Usery Professor in Labor Studies. The

position would begin in August 2005.

 

 

JOB DESCRIPTION/QUALIFICATIONS:

 

The Chair commemorates the work of former U.S. Secretary of

Labor Bill Usery, in recognition of his national contribution

to the field of workplace competitiveness and productivity

through progressive employer-employee relations. Candidates

may have a primary field in labor economics, but candidates

may also have a primary field in such diverse areas as

regional economics, public economics, demography, industrial

organization, applied macroeconomics, and international

economics, provided their work focuses on workplace and

workforce issues. Examples of research areas that are

particularly relevant include: U.S. workforce trends, the

globalization of the labor market, regional patterns in

employment, workplace systems and practices, employee

benefits (including health and retirement insurance),

workforce development, job and worker mobility, balancing

family and work, labor market trends over the business cycle,

and U.S. labor law.

 

Candidates should have an exceptional record of published

research with a national and international reputation for

excellence in their field; have a history of collaborative,

multi-disciplinary analysis of current workplace policy

issues; and have a record of influencing policy debates at

the state or national level. Preference will be given to

applicants with a strong interest in policy applications in

their area. Responsibilities include teaching, research,

and involvement in on-going policy activities of the

centers associated with the School. The person holding the

endowed chair will be a tenured full professor in the

Department of Economics in the Andrew Young School of

Policy Studies, which currently has 32 permanent faculty

members and is expected to add several new positions in the

future.
