Two GDN constituencies have selected their representatives for the

Governing Body. The Latin American and Caribbean region has selected

Eliana Cardoso,Professor of Economics at the Escola de Economia da Fundacao Getulio Vargas, Sao Paulo as their representative. The International

Sociological Association has selected Sujata Patel from the University of Pune as their representative for a second term.

> Deadline extended for Medals for Research on Development

The Medals for Outstanding Research on Development carry cash prizes of

US,000 plus travel expenses to the Global Development Network’s Sixth

Annual Development Conference. Two prize medals—one for US,000 plus travel and another for US,000 plus travel—will be granted for completed research

papers in each of five topic areas corresponding to the theme of the Sixth Annual Conference of the Global Development Network, "Developed and developing

worlds: mutual impact." GDN welcomes submissions from all branches of the social sciences. Multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary submissions are

particularly encouraged.

> Deadline: All research categories are now closed, except for the Trade policies and Sub-Saharan Africa category (topic 2) for which the deadline has been

extended to October 12, 2004.

> Deadline extended for Medals for Research on Development

The Japanese Award for Outstanding Research on Development carries cash

prizes of US,000 plus travel expenses to the Global Development

Network’s Sixth Annual Development Conference. An award of US,000 will be given to the institution whose proposed research in one of the five topic

areas chosen for this year's competition holds the greatest promise for improving our understanding of development. Two prizes of US,000 will be given

to the institutions of the other two finalists to continue work in the chosen research area. The Award funds will be used to support the undertaking of the

submitted research proposal. Funding for the Award is generously provided by the Government of Japan. In two of the five topic areas, namely, "Trade

policies and Sub-Saharan

Africa" and "Conflict, human security and migration," submissions will be

accepted in French or English.

>Deadline: All research categories are now closed, except for the Trade

policies and Sub-Saharan Africa category (topic 2) for which the deadline

has been extended to October 12, 2004.

-->> IMF/GDN Visiting Scholars Program 2004/2005 The International

Monetary Fund (IMF) and Global Development Network are pleased to announce

the fifth year of the IMF/GDN Visiting Scholars Program. The program provides for up to five researchers from GDN's regional networks to visit the IMF for

a period of five weeks to work on research supported by both the network and GDN. During the attachment, a staff member from the IMF Research Department

will be designated to work with the visiting researcher. In addition, the visiting researcher will also have the opportunity to interact with other staff

from the IMF and to use the information and data available at the IMF. The final product of

the project could also be published by the IMF after the local

organization has published it.

-->> Calls for proposals for Global Research Project in ERF and AERC. GDN

is supporting a large multi-disciplinary global research project entitled

“Impact of Rich Country Policies on Poverty: A Global View.” Proposals are sought to undertake country studies in the Middle East, North Africa, Turkey

and Iran and in Sub-Saharan Africa on this important theme in the areas of aid,investment, migration, or trade (see previous issues of this newsletter for

similar calls in other regions). Interested researchers are invited to submit proposals on specific issues or combinations of issues of particular

importance to their countries. Proposals should include a detailed description of the methodology to be used, the availability of suitable data, and the

composition of the research teams. Proposals with teams that include younger researchers or less established institutions are particularly encouraged.

Studies in approximately

30 countries will be supported around the world. Selections will be made

on a competitive basis with regional allocations.

>Deadlines and submission information

The deadline for submissions is October 15, 2004. Submissions should be

sent to ipapkov@gdnet.org.

>Selection and Eligibility

Country studies will be selected based on a competitive process.

Residents of developing and transition countries are encouraged to send in

proposals describing how they would meet the challenge of the project as outlined in the next section. Particular emphasis should be placed on the

composition of the team, the main issues in your country, testable hypotheses, and the methodological approach(es) to be used. CVs of all researchers

must be attached. The inclusion of younger researchers and institutions is encouraged. The size of the team is not fixed but should be set so as to meet

the goals of the research,taking into account budgetary considerations. At least 50 percent of all principal researchers must be residents of a developing

or transition

country. A budget should be included in the submission. Researchers

will receive an honorarium and other research expenses based on local

costs. These will be calculated based on involvement in a research project and not as a consultancy. There is no fixed format for proposals.

Nevertheless, each submission should contain at a minimum: (1)

Composition of the research team; (2) CVs of all researchers, including

countries of residence and e-mails; (3) Time period to be covered; (4) Main policies or policy interactions that are of particular interest in your

country; (5) Testable hypotheses; (6) Detailed methodology; (7) Explanation of why the research team is well suited for this work, and

(8) Budget.

>AERC: Specific Information

A five-person selection committee will choose up to five submissions, who

will then be asked to join the project and present their work at a full

project workshop in Dakar, Senegal, just before GDN's Sixth Annual Development Conference on January 24-26, 2005. GDN will pay economy travel and

accommodation expenses to the workshop.

>ERF: Specific Information

Up to ten submissions from the Middle East, North Africa, Turkey and Iran

region will be invited to present at a special one-day workshop in Beirut,

Lebanon, on December 13, 2004, immediately before ERF’s Annual Conference. GDN will pay 50 percent of economy travel and accommodation expenses to attend

the workshop and ERF conference. A five-person selection committee will choose the top four or five submissions, who will then be asked to present their

work at a full project workshop in Dakar, Senegal just before GDN’s Annual Conference from January 24-26, 2005. GDN will pay 100 percent of economy travel

and accommodation expenses to the GDN Annual Conference.

->> Conference announcements The Agence française de Développement (AFD)

will finance the Second Annual EUDN Conference in Paris in November 2004.

The event will start with a one day AfD- EUDN Conference, on November 25. This will be followed by a two-day Academic EUDN Conference, from November 26 to

November 27. The two days conference invites paper submissions on "Trade, Aid, FDI and Inter-national Migration". Around 40 people are expected to attend
