1. CIAT: Senior Research Fellow - Socio-economics
The Tropical Soil Biology and Fertility Institute (TSBF) of Centro Internacional
de Agricultura Tropical (CIAT) operates as an integral part of the CIAT
research programme and is housed at the ICRAF Campus, Nairobi, Kenya.
The major mode of implementation of TSBF research is through collaboration
with national scientists through projects and networks. TSBF was launched
with the mission 'to contribute to human welfare and the conservation of
environments in the tropics by developing improved practices for sustaining
tropical soil fertility through the management of biological processes and
organic resources in combination with judicious use of inorganic inputs'.
The position.
TSBF-CIAT is seeking a Senior Research Fellow - socio-economics for its
office in Nairobi, to manage on a day-to-day basis a project on 'Exploring the
multiple potentials of soybeans in enhancing rural livelihoods and small
industry in East Africa'. S/he will report to the Integrated Soil Fertility
Management officer Project Coordinator on a day-to-day basis. The main
responsibility of the incumbent will be (i) to inventorise and evaluate past
research and development efforts aimed at enhancing soybean production,
marketing, and utilization in East Africa, (ii) to delineate the potential markets
for soybean for home consumption and community-based processing in the
target agro-ecozones, and for large-scale processing at the national scale, (iii)
to evaluate ex-ante the competitiveness of soybean and the potential
contributions that soybean could make to rural livelihoods and the natural
resource base, and (iv) to outline measures that are necessary to achieve
successful and widespread uptake of soybean-based cropping system and
processing technologies.
Specific duties will include:
- Liaise regularly with the various national and international partners to ensure
proper implementation of the various project activities.
- Compile a database of stakeholders interested in soybean production and
marketing for the East African region.
- Report achievements and progress on a yearly basis to both the donor
organization and TSBF-CIAT.
- Backstop socio-economic activities in other projects managed by TSBF.
- Assist in capacity building related socio-economics and marketing within the
African Network of TSBF, AfNet.
- Liaise with other project and institutions working on market-led integrated
soil fertility management with respect to data and information exchange.
Requirements for the position include:
- PhD degree in economics, marketing research, or related topic;
- Three years experience in a similar position;
- Proven experience in marketing research;
- Proven publication record in peer-reviewed international journals;
- Detailed knowledge about African farming systems;
- Have an excellent command of English, knowledge of French will be an
advantage; and
- Have the ability to work with people of different nationalities and disciplines.

3. PostDoc - Genetic Improvement (Fish Breeding), WorldFish Center,
Penang A member of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural
Research (CGIAR), the WorldFish Center is an international scientific
research organization conducting fisheries and aquaculture research in
tropical developing countries. The global headquarters of the Center is in
Penang, Malaysia with operations/offices in a number of countries. The
Center is currently recruiting a highly competent and motivated individual to fill
the following position:
Post Doctoral Fellow - Genetic Improvement Under the direction and
guidance of the Project Leader (Genetic Enhancement), and in accordance to
the existing management structure, the Post Doctoral Fellow - Genetic
Improvement (PostDoc) will contribute towards the design, planning, conduct,
monitoring, data analysis and evaluation of research projects, including
laboratory and field work pertaining to such projects. The PostDoc may also
be responsible for preparing, organizing and
providing research related support to other Center units and Center's
partners. Duties and Responsibilities:
WorldFish Center is currently involved in a genetic improvement project for
Carp species with six Asian partner countries ( Bangladesh , China , India
,Indonesia , Thailand and Vietnam ). The PostDoc will be primarily, but not
exclusively, involved in the implementation of a second three year phase of
this project, which has just begun. Major duties and responsibilities will be:
- Design, implement and maintain the system of data capture, storage,
retrieval and analysis for the genetic enhancement projects being conducted
by WorldFish.
- Assist in the development of research proposals in the area of genetic
enhancement, and in other areas as directed.
- Assist in the preparation of Memoranda of Agreement and all other
documents that may be required for the implementation of an approved
research proposal.
- Assist in the preparation of material for internal and external project reviews.
- Assist in the preparation of progress reports and final reports pertaining to
genetic enhancement projects.
- Assist in projects' budget monitoring and management.
- Prepare publications at the scientific, extension and popular press level,
disseminating the results of genetic enhancement projects, and in other
publications as directed.
- Assist in the planning and conduct of Centre sponsored conferences,
workshops, training courses and other such activities related to genetic
enhancement research, development and technology transfer.
- Prepare and make presentations on projects' outline and results as directed.
- Prepare and maintain material on genetic enhancement projects for the
WorldFish Center's web site.
- Conduct literature searches and reviews.
- Train and supervise Research Assistants and other staff working in, or
associated with, genetic enhancement projects.
- Interface and coordinate activities with counterpart staff from partner
organizations and countries prior to and during project implementation.
- Join and actively participate in scientific endeavors and associations,
pursuing professional development and promoting the Center's objectives of
high achievement and excellence.
- Promote the vision, mission, objectives, principles and an impeccable image
of the WorldFish Centre at all times. Requirements:
- PhD within the past 5 years in an area of Center's research priorities, must
have demonstrated skills in a subject either directly related to, or requiring
extensive use of statistical procedures relevant to genetics and animal
breeding.
- Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English;
- Willingness to undertake extensive national and international travel and field
work if necessary.
- A background in aquaculture and related sciences would be highly
desirable.
- Experience in a research or education organization is highly desirable.
- Exposure to and familiarity with aquaculture genetic enhancement data
would also be highly desirable.
- Competence in the management and supervision of fish tank and pond
research facilities would be a very valuable asset. Previous participation in
international research activities would be advantageous.
- Competence in computer applications for data base development and
maintenance, use of statistical procedures for the analysis of fish breeding
data, competence in programming and use of SAS (Statistical Analysis
System), experience in the use of special purpose programs such as
ASREML,
DFREML, VCE and PEST. The position is immediately available, initially for
two years, with
opportunity for continuity depending on availability of funds. The Center offers

and marketing systems for milk and meat products; adapt and transfer
appropriate technologies in milk and meat processing to member countries;
provide assistance to FAO Members Countries in formulating and
implementing livestock development programmes as they relate to their milk
and meat sectors; in particular, advise countries on the development and
implementation of appropriate sanitary and other quality standards, and on
related technologies at production and processing levels; cooperate with
national institutions in planning/establishing training, extension, research and
human resources development programmes for the milk and meat sectors;
plan, organize and participate in scientific and technical meetings; prepare
and edit reports, manuals, guidelines and other specialized publications
concerning the above; perform other related duties as required.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Candidates should meet the following:
Advanced University Degree in one of the following: Animal Production;
Animal/Meat/Dairy Science; or Food Processing and Technology Seven years
of relevant experience in developing milk and meat processing programmes
in developing countries which included experience in training and institutional
development Working knowledge of English and French
