INEQUALITY, POLITICS AND POWER

The distributions of income, wealth and political power are
jointly determined, with economic status both affecting and
being affected by political influence. In addition, the
impact of inequality on the nature of institutions and on
policy choice is one of the key channels through which
income and wealth distributions affect economic
performance. The III World Bank Conference on Inequality
will focus on the interaction between economic and
political inequalities, and on their consequences for
institutional and economic development. Theoretical and
empirical papers on any aspect of this subject are invited
for consideration by the program committee.
CONFERENCE DETAILS:
The conference will take place on 5-6 June 2006 in
Washington, DC. It will be a plenary-only gathering, with
space for up to eighteen papers and 30 minutes allocated to
each paper. Accommodation and travel costs (economy) will
be covered by the organizers.

CONFERENCE ON MEDICAL MALPRACTICE LIABILITY
May 19-20, 2006
Medical malpractice liability garners media headlines.
Basic issues such as the scope of the problem and workable
solutions are hotly contested, often without serious
analytical or empirical support. This conference seeks to
promote a better understanding of relevant issues, such as
the benefits of liability, the social costs of liability
(with a focus on physician supply and defensive medicine),
the role of liability insurance, and the adequacy of the
litigation/settlement process. It will also examine the
merits of policies such as expert medical courts, damage
caps, and workers' compensation. Empirical work is
preferred, but strong analytic pieces will also be
included.
PAPER SUBMISSIONS:
This call for papers invites scholars in economics,
business (especially insurance), health policy, medicine
and law to submit papers. The papers can be empirical or
theoretical, and more or less technical.

AIM:
The shape of financial supervisory architecture is a
crucial issue in several countries. Bocconi University,
through the Paolo Baffi Centre for Monetary and Financial
Economics, promotes a Conference in order to investigate
all aspects concerning the economics and law of the design
of financial supervision institutions, with particular
emphasis on independence, accountability and governance.
The Conference wishes to bring together academics,
financial supervisors and central bankers.
TOPICS:
The Conference will be divided in six sessions, focusing on
the following topics: Principles: Economics; Principles:
Institutions; Practices: The Role of Governance; Practices:
Determinants and Effects; Special Issues: Financing
Supervisory Authorities; Special Issues: Making Supervision
Architectures Effective.

FORMAT:
In each section, papers will be presented in a plenary
presentation of 30 minutes each, followed by a 10-15
minutes of discussion. Overall participation at the
Conference will be limited to 40 people. All copyrights of
the papers will be retained by the authors. The possibility
of a conference proceedings book will be discussed during
the Conference among speakers and discussants.

The Conference will take place at the Bocconi University in
Milan, on May 29-30, 2006.

The Paolo Baffi Centre will refund economy-class travel
expenses and will cover accommodation for paper presenters

SMALL OPEN ECONOMIES IN A GLOBALIZED WORLD

We would like to invite you to submit a paper for
presentation at the conference "Small Open Economies in a
Globalized World" (SOEGW). The conference will be held at
the Rimini campus of the University of Bologna on August
29th - September 2nd, 2006.
OVERVIEW:
The SOEGW conference is an international meeting aimed at
assembling an international group of leading economists to
present and discuss their research on issues concerning
small open economies in the fast changing environment of
the current globalized world. The conference will focus on
international trade in goods and services, including
tourism, international finance and international monetary
and fiscal policies. Since small open economies are facing
challenges in dimensions which bypass the usual borders of
international economics, we also invite papers in other
areas of economics, including business cycles analysis,
economic geography, general equilibrium, growth, industrial
organization, labour economics, quantitative methods and
regional development.
During the conference proceedings, Professor Robert Mundell
will be awarded an Honorary Degree by the University of
Bologna.
PAPER SUBMISSIONS:
The conference is organized by Canadian and Italian
economists but is open to scientific contributions from all
over the world. Authors should submit an extended abstract
of up to 500 words. Please include with the submission JEL
classification codes for the paper, keywords as well as
JEL classification codes of the author(s) specialization
field(s). Complete papers may be submitted but the extended
abstract is required. In case of more than one author,
please note the corresponding author. The submissions
should be sent in PDF format to the address provided below.
The deadline for submissions is 31/03/2006. The authors
will be notified no later than 30/04/2006 whether their
papers have been accepted.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS
CAF RESEARCH PROGRAM ON DEVELOPMENT ISSUES
The Corporacion Andina de Fomento (CAF) invites
applications for its Research Program on Development
Issues. The Program invites proposals for research papers
on topics of interest to CAF. CAF will provide economic
support to the proposals selected, finished papers will be
presented in a local seminar and distributed.
ELIGIBILITY:
The program is intended primarily, but not exclusively, for
researchers associated with Latin American universities,
research institutes and other private or public
institutions in Latin America.
The invitation is also extended to assistant professors,
researchers or postgraduates from CAF member countries
working in US or European institutions with focus on topics
related to Latin America.
TOPICS:
This year, the program will center on the main topic: "The
challenge of social inclusion". It will support research
that focuses on ways to provide the poor and excluded with
opportunities to generate wealth and to take advantage of
the economic growth that can be expected from a greater
participation in the global economy and a change in
production patterns. Proposals pertaining to the following
research topics will be considered:
Policy Instruments
- How can social policy instruments such as microfinance,
social investment funds and social responsibility
programs, be expanded, improved and made broader in
scope?
- How can public policy generate and strengthen social
capital?
- How can social expenditure programs become more
efficient, better targeted, less procyclical and less
vulnerable to crisis?
Long-term Policies
- What policies should be taken in order to improve human
capital accumulation and quality?
- How can health services be improved under fiscal
constraints?
- How can labor markets become more efficient without
sacrificing workers' social benefits?
Interested researchers are invited visit CAF's web page

reference of this call for proposals.
PROGRAM CONDITIONS:
CAF will pay US$ 6.000 to selected proposals. Additionally,
it will pay travel (economy class) and lodging expenses for
a seminar to be held in Caracas where final papers will be
presented. CAF reserves the right to publish and distribute
resulting works. Authors however are free to submit the
finished work to specialized journals or publications or to
use it to fulfill academic requirements, provided that CAF
sponsorship is acknowledged.
Final papers must be written in English and submitted by
September 30, 2006.
Seminars will take place starting October 2006.
Selected papers may be chosen to be presented in a LACEA
round table to be sponsored by CAF in the next LACEA Annual
Meeting. CAF will cover travel (economy class) and lodging
expenses for this participation.

Post Doctor Positions in Macroeconomics and
International Economics
The Department of Economics at the Norwegian School of
Economics and Business Administration (NHH) in Bergen,
Norway ( www.nhh.no ) invites applications for two
junior positions (Post Doctor); one in macroeconomics and
one in international economics. The positions are of for
four years duration. The positions will involve teaching
and some additional graduate supervision within the
Department. The positions allow opportunity to qualify for
higher-level positions.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
The Department is especially dedicated to research and
therefore primarily seeks applicants from top international
schools. Applicants should have extensive personal
experience in macroeconomics or international economics
respectively, demonstrated by existing papers or a
dissertation, and ideally by publications in first-rate
journals.
Applicants should have completed or be close to completing
a Ph.D. in macroeconomics or international economics. The
PhD must be completed by the appointment date.
In the event of equivalent qualifications, female
applicants will be given preference.

The Department of Applied Economics of the Erasmus School
of Economics is recruiting an Assistant Professor in the
area of Entrepreneurship. The position is held in a
recently set up unit which is to develop and conduct

governance, organization and strategy using the economics
perspective.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
The Assistant Professor has a PhD in economics, management
or a related area. He or she has a preference for the
application of economics in the field of entrepreneurship.
The required research output depends on the time passed
since his or her PhD, and should be of high quality as
evidenced by the publication of books, papers in journals
and edited volumes. International recognition should be
evidenced by invited lectures, membership of conference
programme committees and chairing of workshops.
The candidate has experience with the teaching of
entrepreneurship at the micro level (as a management tool
in corporations) or at the macro level (entrepreneurship
and the macro economy). Moreover, he or she should have
experience with the supervision of Master students.

at INRA is made of collaboration across multiple

ABOUT GAEL:
The Grenoble Applied Economics Laboratory (GAEL) is a team
of 15 permanent researchers. It is specialized in the
economics of consumers' behavior and in the economics of
innovation. The major methodologies used to conduct
research are the experimental economics methods,
econometrics and the more traditional methods in industrial
organization.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
The successful candidate will join a dynamic team
specialized on food consumption behaviors. The research
programs currently engaged focus on (1) the revelation of
willingness to pay for some characteristics of
differentiated products, (2) the relevance of nutrition
components in consumers' choices, (3) the acceptability of
food innovation, (4) the theories and the experimental
methods to analyze economic behaviors. The position is
available in experimental economics. However, a candidate
with training in experimental psychology or in advanced
microeconomics ready to complete his/her skills in

candidate with no previous experience as a post-doc will
have to spend time abroad after a first year of training.

JOB DESCRIPTION/QUALIFICATIONS:
The successful candidate is expected to teach the core
Microeconomics courses at any level. Teaching should be in
English or German. The gross salary is in the range of CHF
118,000 to 190,000 depending on qualification. The
successful candidate will have a strong research record.

public economics starting October 2006. The appointment is
for four years and can be prolonged, conditional on
performance, for another two years.
JOB DESCRIPTION/QUALIFICATIONS:
Applications are solicited in all fields of public
economics, including public finance, public policy, public
choice, and institutional economics. The successful
candidate is expected to teach public finance at any level.
Teaching should be in English or German. The gross salary
is in the range of CHF 90,000 to 135,000 depending on
qualification. The successful candidate will have a strong
research potential. Candidates should hold a Ph.D. by the
time their appointment starts.
