Welcome to new doctoral students at ZEF

November 10, 2011.

ZEF welcomes this year's batch of new doctoral students. Thirty-one students from 16 countries start into their doctoral education at ZEF.

During the three years to come, they will first participate in ZEF's interdisciplinary and disciplinary course program to strengthen their theoretical and methodological skills. In addition, they will prepare their field research to be conducted in the second year of ZEF's doctoral program. After returning from this practical experience of collecting (primary) data and collaborating with local partners they return to ZEF to write up their doctoral theses.

It takes three and a half years on average for ZEF students to finish their doctoral studies. After defending their thesis and receiving their doctoral degree, the manjority of ZEF graduates start or continue their careers in an development-oriented work environment such as international organizations, research institutes and universities.

The students of batch 2011 are going to conduct research on topics that fit into ZEF's overall research agenda including themes such as "Food price volatility", "Wealth inequality and biodiversity conservation" and "Scientific cooperation as an instrument of development cooperation".
