Background information:

The development of African agriculture plays a decisive role in creating concrete prospects for Africa’s people, as it is a major source of livelihood for the majority of the population in almost all African countries. Moreover, as a supplier of healthy, locally grown food, agriculture contributes significantly to the reduction of hunger and malnutrition. But it can also become a real “job engine” if combined with technological development and innovation. This idea is not new, but it is currently receiving a new, up-to-date momentum in the political debate in Germany on how to tackle the causes of flight and migration out of Africa. After all, agriculture offers in particular young people a perspective for developing their careers.

Promising steps in this direction have been taken already. One success story and showcase is the work of the <link http: www.iita.org>International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), based in Nigeria. Since its inception 50 years ago, the institute has trained and educated more than 140,000 people in Africa in and for the agricultural sector. Since 2012, the training program "IITA <link http: blogs.iita.org index.php african-countries-back-iita-youth-agripreneur-initiative-to-end-unemployment>Youth Agripreneur" has been helping more than 2,000 young Africans become successful (agricultural) entrepreneurs.
