2 Doctoral Student Positions for Agricultural Economists
The Department of Agricultural Economics and Rural Development of the Georg-August-
University of Goettingen (Germany) has two openings for doctoral students to work in
research projects related to the economics of high-value agricultural supply chains in
developing countries. The positions are funded for a period of three years, with a starting
date in April 2008 (or somewhat later). In particular, research on the following topics shall be
carried out:
1. Impacts of contract agriculture in the small farm sector.
2. Impacts of technological innovations in the small farm sector.
Both projects are carried out jointly with international organizations under the guidance of
Professor M. Qaim. The regional focus is East Africa and/or Southeast Asia, and the
research will involve collection of primary farm survey data in selected study countries.
Students will participate in the International PhD Program for Agricultural Sciences in
Goettingen (IPAG).
Successful candidates should have an outstanding Master´s degree (or equivalent) in
agricultural economics (or related discipline), experience with quantitative economic
techniques, proven interest in rural development policy issues, excellent command of the
English language (preferably also German), and very good computer skills.

The International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) is seeking applications
from innovative, self-motivated, scientifically outstanding plant breeders to support the
development of high-yielding, drought tolerant maize germplasm in Sub-Saharan Africa. The
position contributes to and draws on the experiences of a large multi-disciplinary research
team with focus on drought tolerance. It will be based at CIMMYT´s Nairobi Office in Kenya
but will involve travel to other CIMMYT field sites in eastern and southern Africa and involve
collaboration with public and private, local and international partners. CIMMYT-Kenya is
hosted by the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) in Nairobi, Kenya. The position is initially
available for three years and could lead to a career position within CIMMYT.

Country Coordinator Wanted for Primate Rehabilitation and Conservation Project in
Ghana/West Africa
A highly motivated and dedicated person required as country coordinator for the West African
Primate Conservation Action (WAPCA).
Hiring Organisation: The NGO West African Primate Conservation Action, founded in 2001,
is an initiative of several European zoos and conservation organisations with the common
goal to enhance the conservation of primates in the Eastern Upper Guinean Forest in West
Africa. In cooperation with the Ghana Wildlife Division WAPCA implements conservation
activities in Protected Areas where viable populations of the target species still exist.
WAPCA furthermore collaborates with Accra Zoo where a breeding facility for endangered
primates has been established.
Education campaigns at the zoo and at the forest sites are being conducted to raise
awareness among local people about conservation topics.

Job Description: We are looking for a long-term coordinator and representative for WAPCA
who is based in Ghana. Work will consist of the continuation of currently ongoing activities
and the conceptualisation and development of new projects in cooperation with the European
WAPCA office. All activities will take place at Accra and at Protected Areas in the Western
Region of Ghana. The coordinator will take an active part in supervising the Centre for
Endangered Primates in Achimota/Accra and in the management of all WAPCA
conservation activities in Ghana.
Furthermore, liasing with other NGOs, Wildlife Division, donors and other partners will be an
important tasks. The person will be responsible for around 15 office and field employees.
At the project sites in Western Region community projects must be supervised and trainings
for local people and Wildlife Division staff organized.
The development of tourist attractions is planned and will be realised.
Furthermore, the acquisition of funds, regular project reports and the administration of the
NGO´s local finances form part of the coordinator´s responsibilities.
Qualifications: Applicant must have very good oral and written knowledge of the English
language. Experience in conservation work is necessary. Work and travel experience in
tropical countries is mandatory.
Knowledge in primate keeping, zoo work and practical skills (e.g. mechanics, carpentry etc)
are helpful as well as computer knowledge.
The applicant should have high diplomatic communication skills and leadership qualities and
must be prepared to deal with a broad variety of local people from different backgrounds.
Abilities to work independently, well organized and reliable is mandatory. The position holder
must be able to work aim focused, e.g. set working targets, follow up and regularly report on
them.
Conditions: The candidate will work together with the present coordinator in Ghana for some
weeks before taking over her position. During the stay in Ghana he/she will be based in
Accra, but inland travel to remote places with basic conditions will be part of the job.
Term of Appointment: start in April 2008, on the base of a one year renewable contract, long-
term stay is preferred.
