GIS and RS courses in Thailand and Croatia
February 26, 2008.
Dear Colleagues,
This message is to announce two important courses:
1) 2nd Regional Course on “Use of GIS and RS in Disaster Risk Management”,
from 05 to 16 May 2008 in Bangkok, Thailand (UN-SPIDER will provide full
funding support for 1 participant)
2) First International Conference on Remote Sensing Techniques in "Disaster
Management and Emergency Response in the Mediterranean Region" from 22 to
24 September 2008 in Zadar, Croatia
Deadline for submission of abstracts: 29th February, 2008 (max. 750 words)

1) 2nd Regional Course on “Use of GIS and RS in Disaster Risk Management”,
from 05 to 16 May 2008 in Bangkok, Thailand.
Organized by the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC) in Bangkok,
Thailand, the International Institute for Geo-Information Science and Earth
Observation (ITC) Enschede, The Netherlands and The Geoinformatics Center,
Asian Institute of Technology (AIT-GIC) Bangkok, Thailand.
The 1st Regional course GRSDM-1 was successfully held in Bangkok in 2007
and brought together 22 participants from 12 different countries. The GRSDM
course provides an excellent opportunity for professionals and
practitioners to obtain essential skills and knowledge in GIS and RS and
their current application in disaster risk management. Participants will
gain practical and technical knowledge on the uses of GIS and RS in
disaster prevention, preparedness and emergency response. Extensive
exercises and simulations will provide an insight into how GIS and RS tools
are applied in these fields, and the benefits and solutions that can be
presented.
Further detailed information along with an application form are available
on:

or www.adpc.net/v2007/Downloads/2008/Jan/Leaflet%20GRSDRM2_final.pdf
or www.geoinfo.ait.ac.th/training/GRSDRM2.pdf
The application form must be submitted before 1 April 2008 by mail, fax or
email. Pre-course information will be provided once registration for the
course is confirmed. UN-SPIDER will provide full funding support (air
travel and course fee) for one participant from the Asia and Pacific
Region, to be chosen by the course organisers. Please indicate in your
registration form that you wish to be considered for funding support.
Please contact Mr. Falak NAWAZ (falak@adpc.net or tedadpc@adpc.net) or Mr.
Norman KERLE (kerle@itc.nl)for further information related to this course.
2) First International Conference on Remote Sensing Techniques in "Disaster
Management and Emergency Response in the Mediterranean Region" from 22 to
24 September 2008 in Zadar, Croatia.
The Conference is jointly organised by EARSeL, the Scientific Council for
Remote Sensing-Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, University of Zadar
and GEOSAT Ltd., Zagreb.
The subject "Disaster Management and Emergency Response" is a high-priority
topic in the Mediterranean region. Risk reduction using remote sensing
techniques may be very helpful in various applications. Identification of
relevant space-based and airborne information for Disaster Management
Support and Emergency Response is a major priority issue.
The Conference is expected to provide an international forum which will
bring together experts from different remote sensing and GIS branches as
well as experts from disaster management to present and discuss their
results, and to exchange their experiences and expertise in Disaster Risk
Reduction, using new technologies, development and applications.
The Conference will cover several stages in risk management, such as
knowledge, prevention, warning, management of emergency situations,
post-analysis of crisis, environmental rehabilitation, etc.
