WASCAL Graduate Studies Program
In the framework of the WASCAL research and capacity building program in West Africa six Graduate (Doctoral) Research Programs have been established. The African-German doctoral programs are located in Benin, La Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Mali, Senegal, and Nigeria. These programs focus on research areas related to West African climate change systems, climate change and land use, biodiversity, water resources, economics and agriculture.
Activities to date
Ninety-eight students enrolled in these research programs have completed their course work, and are conducting thesis research. Seven of them are presently in Germany.
In addition to the doctoral programs four Master’s Programs have been set up at the universities of the Gambia, Niger, Nigeria and Togo. These programs focus on relations between climate change and land use, human security, education, and energy. Sixty students have enrolled in the master’s programs (including new intakes in November 2013).
Professors from the University of Bonn and ZEF and other German institutions lecture and supervise the students’ research, and also participate in other activities of the Graduate Studies Program.
