Around 500 students from more than 100 countries have participated in the BIGS-DR program at ZEF since its inception in 1999. Each annual batch has around 20-30 students from different academic and disciplinary backgrounds. Our students complete their doctoral studies in about 3-4 years.

Ahmed Abdalla successfully defended his doctoral thesis!

Congratulations to Ahmed Abdalla who successfully defended his doctoral thesis on "Transitions towards sustainable agriculture: The case of wheat-based production systems in Egypt" on December 04, 2023 at ZEF!

Ahmed was a doctoral researcher at ZEF and the Right Livelihood Campus Bonn and received his doctoral degree from the Faculty of Agriculture of Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn.

His first supervisor was Prof. Dr. Mathias Becker (Professor of Plant Nutrition in the Tropics and Subtropics at the University of Bonn) and his second supervisor was Prof. Dr. Christian Borgemeister.

Ahmed's research was funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) via the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and by the Dr. Hermann Eiselen Doctoral Programm of the Foundation fiat panis.
