Online ZEF Colloquium on COMPASS: Comparing Aquaculture Systems Sustainability.
April 30, 2020 | 13:30 h - 14:30 h
Online ZEF Colloquium
Speaker: Dr. Stefan Partelow, Postdoctoral Researcher at the Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research (ZMT) in Bremen
Topic: COMPASS: Comparing Aquaculture Systems Sustainability
Abstract:
Starting March 2020, our BMBF funded bioeconomy project will examine aquaculture sustainability in Lombok, Indonesia. Aquaculture is the fastest growing food production sector worldwide. COMPASS will examine how the sector can transition towards sustainable development using the social-ecological systems framework, as a diagnostic and deliberation tool. COMPASS will develop three types of knowledge (system, target, transformative) within four working packages. System knowledge will be generated by examining how pond aquaculture systems function as interdependent social-ecological systems, combining social and natural science understandings of system functionality. Target knowledge will be generated by developing image-based tools to facilitate deliberative processes on governance in local communities. We will use field experimental methods to examine the effectiveness of the image-based intervention, and to assess the role deliberation can play in shaping goals, visions, and values for local sustainability transitions. Transformative knowledge will be developed through data inclusion in the open-access data database (SESMAD) for comparison and synthesis.
Stefan Partelow is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research (ZMT) in Bremen, Germany. He is an environmental social scientist with a Ph.D. in Political Science from Jacobs University in Bremen, and an M.Sc. in Environmental Studies and Sustainability Science from Lund University, Sweden. Much of his work focuses on environmental governance and collective action problems.
