Long-term Energy Scenarios for the Clean Energy Transition

Presenter:  Dr Pablo Carvajal is an energy systems planning specialist. He works in the use and development of model-based energy scenarios, supporting countries to plan their clean energy transition in an affordable, sustainable and just way. Dr Carvajal has worked with international organisations including IRENA, the IADB, the GIZ and WWF. He has also been an advisor to the Ecuadorian Government. He is Lead Author of the IPPC Sixth Assessment Report Chapter 15 on Climate Finance and was Lead Author of the UN Emissions Gap Report 2019 Chapter on Energy Transition. He has also published a series of academic articles on the topic of long-term energy scenarios and the uncertainty of climate change impacts. Dr Carvajal has lectured in Advanced Energy Systems Modelling at University College London and Microeconomics at the University of Paris-Dauphine.He holds a PhD in Energy and Economics from UCL, United Kingdom, and a Master of Science in Renewable Energy from the University of Oldenburg Germany

Keywords:  energy transition, long-term scenarios, energy modelling, energy planning

Summary:  Upgrading today’s power systems to accommodate high shares of renewable energy, boost efficiency and cut climate-damaging emissions calls for imaginative, holistic energy planning. Scenario modelling has become an essential tool to lay the groundwork for clean, reliable, sustainable future energy systems. Energy transitions involve complex and varying challenges for different countries and regions. Yet the climate goals of the Paris Agreement include urgent action to decarbonise global energy use.

The presentation will outline the International Renewable Energy Agency’s approach to promote the wider use of long-term energy scenarios to guide the clean energy transition from the government’s perspective.

NOTE: The colloquium, including the Q&A part, might be recorded. You will have the option to switch off your video and send questions through the chatbox.
