Title: At the Science Policy Interface: LANd Use SYNergies and CONflicts within the framework of the 2030 Agenda

The limited availability of natural resources, population growth and increasing consumption are presenting society with enormous challenges such as climate change, hunger, biodiversity loss and land degradation. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted to overcome these challenges but already today, the demand for food, raw materials, energy and housing has exceeded the availability of bio productive area. This causes land use conflicts, loss of biodiversity and land degradation. The insufficient coordination between land use decisions of different political sectors often leads to conflicts of ownership, access and use. This is especially the case in sub-Saharan Africa, where the pressure on land is increasing. In the project LANUSYNCON (At the Science Policy Interface: LANd Use SYNergies and CONflicts within the framework of the 2030 Agenda) we examine the complex tradeoffs between different Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Knowledge about decision making and land use will be linked with the SDGs in an innovative way and translated into model-based policy decision and land use scenarios. Lisa Biber-Freudenberger will give an overview of the ongoing and envisaged research of the project LANUSYNCON. She will introduce the research framework of the project and present research results from recently completed and ongoing studies.
