Title: Climate-smart Agriculture and smallholder farmers

Abstract:

The threat of climate change remains a significant challenge to the achievement of food and nutrition security and the SDGs, especially among food crop farmers in developing countries. Given the potential conflict between climate change mitigation, livelihood and food security, information on climate change impacts, and the role of climate-smart agriculture (CSA) as an adaptation and mitigation strategy, will be useful to analysts and policy makers. In addition, while government and other agencies focus on promoting production technologies that will enhance land use sustainability and fertility, there is the need for caution about potential harmful effects of excess herbicides (glyphosate) that are associated with some climate-smart agricultural practices. Empirical findings from various sources indicate that CSA has positive and significant impacts on yields, food and nutrition security, as well as reduction in farmers’ exposure to risk. The presentation also highlights the controversial role of herbicides in CSA and questions the environmental soundness of some CSA technologies in the context sustainability.
