The UN General Assembly formally designated 13 October as the annual date (Resolution 64/200), that people and communities around the world celebrate how they are reducing their exposure to disasters and raising awareness about the importance of reining in the risks that they face. In 2016, a new campaign on how to celebrate this day was introduced through the launch of the new "Sendai Seven" campaign, centered on the seven targets of the Sendai Framework. This year, 2017, the target will be on substantially reducing the number of affected people globally by disasters by 2030, aiming to lower average global figure per 100,000 in the decade 2020 -2030 compared to the period 2005-2015.

The event is targeted at a broad range of participants from academia, political organisations and societal representatives to provide a valuable foundation for networking between future African leaders and German institutions, international organisations or stakeholders in the field of disaster risk, youth development and good governance.

The event is expected to enhance the awareness and complexities of salient disaster risk reduction and governance issues plaguing the African continent. This is expected to strengthen the social attitude and prepare future decision makers to become strong stakeholders in reducing disasters on the continent. The platform shall be an avenue for further strengthening of an active network for disaster and risk mitigations issues including but not limited to African youth.

Admission is free!
