Topic: Empowering Communities for a Just Transition towards Land Degradation Neutrality: Evidence from Benin, Kenya, Madagascar and Malawi
Speaker: Dr. Frederike Klümper, TMG Research
Abstract
The presentation will explore the intersection of land degradation neutrality (LDN) initiatives and land tenure rights in Benin, Kenya, Madagascar and Malawi, focusing on the impact on forest-dependent communities. The results show that communities are highly dependent on forest resources for their livelihoods, emphasising the critical importance of recognising and protecting legitimate tenure rights. However, the study also uncovers cases of violations of these rights, exacerbated by institutional challenges and conflicting interpretations of regulations. With that the, the research highlights the need to integrate legitimate tenure rights into LDN initiatives and proposes six solutions to address these challenges, emphasising the importance of participatory approaches and inclusive governance mechanisms.
