Abstract

The current Colombian government under president Petro has announced high ambitions for an energy transition of the country in the electoral campaign and started first initiatives. Global North countries like Germany support this process, e.g. with credit lines from development banks, technology, know-how and political cooperation agreements. But what is the current state of Colombia’s energy system, what is needed for a decarbonization and transition to a renewable energies?

This lecture presents findings from an analysis of the Colombian energy system, sectoral consumption of energy carriers and transition challenges, the current energy supply situation, economic dependencies and transition challenges posed by international energy trade. A first assessment is given what may be necessary for a full decarbonization and how this relates to recent Colombian energy scenarios.
