on Measuring the SDGs – Is Big Data the solution?

Date: Monday, June 27, 2016, 5:00 – 6:00 p.m.
Venue: Zentrum für Entwicklungsforschung / Center for Development Research (ZEF), Walter-Flex-Straße 3, 53113 Bonn (see <link 2316>map</link>). Middle conference room.

Abstract:

With the adoption of the SDGs at UNGA in 2015, the international community has shifted the debate on the “what” to the “how” with measuring as a key component. The 230 unique indicators that underpin the global monitoring framework pose a huge challenge to national statistical offices everywhere – many of them had already difficult to measure the MDGs. In this context, “big data” is sometimes seen as an exciting opportunity to produce more date, quicker, more granular and cheaper with great potential for measuring the SDGs. The presentation will discuss the opportunities and pitfalls of big data from the perspective of national statistical offices and will put this into the larger context of the discussion data for development.
