Course content / abstract:

Meta-analyses are astatistical methodology used to combine quantitative evidence from studies forsystematic synthesis of scientific evidence. R is one of the most used software packages for meta-analysis as it is freelyavailable and offers the greatest range of methods available for meta-analysisin one software. In addition, it features excellent visualization tools. The aim of this course willbe to present an introduction to meta-analysis in R, especially for studentswho have none or basic experience with R. In R, we will (1) install all thenecessary R packages for meta-analysis, (2) learn to import data from excelfiles, (3) get acquainted with basic R code to run meta-analyses and (4)produce basic graphics with meta-analysis results. Throughout the workshop, basic theory on the estimation of the effect sizes as well as modellingapproaches will be discussed. We will also look at practical advice on theconstruction of data extraction and datasets for meta-analyses.
