im Bereich Agrar- und Entwicklungsökonomik
Ab dem 01.10.2007 ist an der Professur "Welternährungswirtschaft und Rurale Entwicklung"
der Universität Göttingen eine wissenschaftliche Assistentenstelle (TV-L 13) zu besetzen. Die
Stelle wird zunächst für drei Jahre befristet; eine Verlängerung ist möglich.
Aufgaben:
Der Stelleninhaber / die Stelleninhaberin soll ökonomische Forschung und Lehre in Bezug
auf rurale Entwicklung in Entwicklungsländern planen und durchführen.
Forschungsschwerpunkte sollen vor allem im Bereich Ökonomik hochwertiger Agrarprodukte
und Anbindung von Kleinbauern an sich verändernde Märkte liegen. Hierzu gehört auch die
Analyse der wachsenden Bedeutung von Supermärkten und Vertragslandwirtschaft sowie
entsprechende Armutsimplikationen auf lokaler Ebene. Initiative bei der Einwerbung von
Drittmitteln und dem Aufbau von Forschungsnetzwerken wird erwartet. Die Stelle ist in
Göttingen angesiedelt, wird jedoch auch Auslandsreisen erfordern. Es besteht die
Möglichkeit zur Habilitation.
Voraussetzungen:
Der erfolgreiche Kandidat / die erfolgreiche Kandidatin sollte eine abgeschlossene Promotion
in Agrarökonomik oder einem verwandten Fach mit überdurchschnittlichem Ergebnis haben.
Vertrautheit mit der Anwendung quantitativer Analysemethoden (vor allem Ökonometrie) auf
ökonomisch relevante Fragestellungen wird vorausgesetzt und sollte nachgewiesen werden
(z.B. durch Publikationen). Erfahrung mit Forschungsprojekten in Entwicklungsländern und
mit der Einwerbung von Drittmitteln ist erwünscht. Sehr gute Deutsch- und
Englischkenntnisse in Wort und Schrift werden erwartet.

The International Research Training Group "Modeling Material Flows and Production
Systems for Sustainable Resource Use in Intensified Crop Production in the North China
Plain" of University of Hohenheim, funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, is
seeking highly qualified and motivated candidates for
2 PhD scholarships
starting June 1st, 2007 for 2 years with an option for a third year, subject to prolongation of
funding by DFG. The PhD grant amounts to 1,103 EUR net per month (+ allowances for family
and stays in Beijing).
The interdisciplinary research and education program is jointly conducted with China
Agricultural University, Beijing. It comprises subprojects in Soil Science, Plant Nutrition, Plant
Ecology, Biogeophysics, Spectroscopy, Crop Science, Plant Breeding, Farm Management,
Computer Applications in Agriculture and Rural Development Theory and Policy. Analysis
and sustainable improvement of cropping systems in the North China Plain are the main
objectives of the research. The accompanying study program focuses on modeling of
agricultural systems.
Successful applicants will work on one of the following research topics:
- Economic evaluation of farm level development strategies
- Agrarian change and rural development policy
Applicants must have an above-average Master´s degree or equivalent in Agricultural
Economics or related fields. The willingness, both to do interdisciplinary research in China
(including research stays of up to several months) and to actively participate in the IRTG
activities, is a prerequisite for the application. Candidates should not be older than 28 years

Head of Capacity Strengthening Department
The International Potato Center (CIP) is seeking a dynamic and innovative professional to
provide expert leadership in human capacity development and allied institutional services.

The Capacity Strengthening Department provides the Center support in organizing programs
and developing materials, and serves as a focal point for various capacity strengthening-
related activities the CGIAR system. The Department is part of the group of research support
services of the Center.
The Position: As funds for traditional resident and short course professional training decline,
CIP seeks a successful professional as Head of the Capacity Strengthening Department and
a researcher to lead the center towards a new strategy complying with its capacity
strengthening mandate taking full advantage of advances in knowledge of adult education
theory, the design and implementation of non-resident training schemes and object-oriented
training materials. The candidate will liaise with fellow capacity strengthening officers in the
CGIAR system.
The successful candidate will:
· A Doctoral Degree in education, instructional technology, human resource
development, social and behavioral sciences, or related field, coupled with significant
capacity strengthening management experience at a senior level in an international
organization. Experience in research organizations, higher education, or capacity
strengthening and consulting firms are highly desirable.
· Demonstrated experience in conducting capacity strengthening needs assessment,
developing capacity strengthening materials, for traditional face-to-face, technology-mediated
and on-line instruction, and implementing and evaluating capacity strengthening programs.
· Familiarity with current best practices in human capacity development in the
international development context. Knowledge and experience in education research an
asset.
· Demonstrated ability to use information and communication technology effectively.
· Knowledge of instructional systems design, including technological applications and
distance learning. Experience with knowledge management systems desirable.
· Demonstrated experience in facilitating human resource development strategies and
translating them into operational and implemented plans. Knowledge of quality assurance
and quality management systems for capacity strengthening, education and learning
desirable.
· Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with a diverse researcher,
staff, and student body.
· Excellent organizational skills and a collaborative leadership style.
· Proactive, innovative and creative attitudes, particularly in developing policies,
solving problems and making decisions.
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English are required. Spanish
ability or a willingness to learn is desirable.
Conditions: The Head of the Capacity Strengthening Department is an international position.

Responsibilities
The position: ITC is recruiting a Regional Project Coordinator for a six-year, multi-country
Project entitled: "Sustainable Management of Endemic Livestock in West Africa / Gestion
Durable du Bétail Endemique en Afrique de l´Ouest", whose aims are community-based
conservation and management of endemic ruminant livestock; better understanding of
existing genetic diversity and the potential; development of strategies for improved utilization
in evolving production systems; policies that affect the livestock and livestock products
targeted, especially those related to market access and marketing channels to facilitate
commercialization by smallholder livestock keepers; and strengthening capacities of relevant
actors to promote sustainable management of livestock resources. The project will be
executed by UNOPS for the Global Environment Facility and the International
Trypanotolerance Centre (ITC) for the African Development Bank in Mali, Senegal, The
Gambia and Guinea. The incumbent will have overall responsibility for the AfDB-funded
component while UNOPS will recruit a coordinator responsible for the GEF funded
component. Responsibilities: The AfDB Project Coordinator will be responsible for: a)
Leading and managing the AfDB-funded project component by providing intellectual
leadership for the initiation and evolution of project activities to ensure achievement of
outputs and their transformation to outcomes through effective dissemination of information;
b) Supporting project implementation by maintaining the project budget, supervising project
expenditures, assisting in the contracting and managing of project personnel and
subcontractors, and monitoring project implementation and achievements of project
outcomes; c) Coordinating and effectively supporting joint activities between the AfDB-funded
and GEF-funded activities, including liaising with partners at UNOPS, national governments
and partners, donors and international research institutions and facilitating inputs of the
project´s Regional Steering Committee into an evolving project design and implementation; d)
Collaborating with the National Coordinator, Experts and Steering Committee in each of the 4
countries; e) Cooperating closely and assisting as Deputy Regional Coordinator the Regional
Coordinator of the GEF-AfBD project.
Core competencies
o Knowledge and experience of livestock and/or agricultural production system development
and ability to prepare and manage complex projects and budgets;o Excellent communications
and interpersonal skills, with ability to work in teams in a multi-cultural environment.
Education
o At least a Master´s Degree (or equivalent) in animal/veterinary sciences, environment, rural
development or related disciplines.
Work experience
o 10 years relevant experience in project management , familiarity with the sub-region,
extensive experience in livestock and/or regional projects; knowledge of the four project
countries is an added advantage.
Languages
o Fluency in French or English and a good working knowledge of the other language as well
as computer literacy.
Other desirable skills
Qualification/experience in sustainable animal genetic resources management and/or in
livestock production and marketing systems a plus.

DIRECTOR, BIODIVERSITY AND INTEGRATED GENE MANAGEMENT PROGRAM

The Organization
ICARDA is a non-profit international agricultural research center in a worldwide consortium of
15 centers, supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research
(CGIAR). The CGIAR is co-sponsored by the World Bank, the Food and Agriculture
Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural
Development (IFAD), and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). With a staff
of over 400 scientists and support personnel, representing more than 45 nationalities,
ICARDA addresses two key areas of agricultural research: germplasm improvement (cereals
and legumes) and natural resource management. The Center has a global mandate for
barley, lentil and faba bean improvement, and a regional mandate for the improvement of
wheat ( with CIMMY ) chickpea and forage and pasture legumes. A major emphasis is placed
on the conservation and management of land and water, and improved productivity of small
ruminants in integrated farming systems in the dry areas. The Center´s research and training
programs are implemented in partnership with national programs and, in most cases, with
other CGIAR centers as well as advanced research institutes in both developing and
industrialized countries.
The Position
The Director of Biodiversity and Integrated Gene Management Program reports to the
Director General, through the Deputy Director General (Research), and is based at
ICARDA´s modern headquarters and main research station located in a rural setting 30 km
from Aleppo, Syria.
The Director is responsible for the overall management and supervision of a multidisciplinary
team of some 20 international senior scientists and 100 support staff working on the
conservation, improvement and sustainable use of agrobiodiversity, of barley, lentil, faba
bean, kabuli chickpea, and forage legumes. The Program includes Center´s Seed Unit on the
adoption of genetic material by farmers. The team includes experts in the areas of genetics,
plant genetic resources, plant breeding, plant pathology, virology, entomology, molecular
biology and in vitro culture, and nutritional quality and Seed System The Program's overall
goal is to assist the national agricultural research systems (NARS) in achieving sustainable
increases in the productivity of mandate crops while protecting the resource base. The
Director is expected to:
· develop and ensure the implementation of sound research strategies for genetic
enhancement of crops listed above for different target environments
· develop strong linkages between molecular genetics such as genomics and other
modern biotechnological tools and traditional plant breeding
· develop project proposals for program funds; manage and adjust the program
resources to ensure efficient execution of research and training activities within a budgetary
ceiling
· serve as a member of the management team of the Center, assist in the
development of policies and the recruitment and evaluation of staff
· develop and implement appropriate training activities for the Program
· monitor and produce quality technical reports and documentation as required, and
disseminate research findings and appropriate technology
· establish links with relevant research institutions and research scientists worldwide
Qualifications and Experience
· Earned PhD in agriculture, preferably in an aspect of crop enhancement
· Minimum of 15 years experience in agricultural research, preferably in the dry areas,
including at least five years experience in research management
· Proven record of scientific excellence, demonstrated managerial capabilities in
leading and motivating multidisciplinary research teams, and ability to provide leadership in
inter-institutional collaborative research
· Experience in developing project proposals for funding, ability to represent the
Program and Center in regional and international forums, and extensive international
experience in agricultural development
· Fluency in spoken and written English; knowledge of Arabic and/or French will be an
advantage.
Terms of Appointment
The appointment will be for an initial period of three years, renewable thereafter on an annual
basis. The salary is paid in US dollars. Benefits include housing allowance, paid home leave

Living in Syria
ICARDA´s headquarters is situated 30 km south of Aleppo, Syria´s second largest city. In
addition to the internationally-accredited school, ICARDA runs a Sports and Social Club for
the staff. Syria has many historical and archaeological sites, some a short drive from Aleppo.
There are four distinct seasons and the terrain varies from desert to mountains to fertile fruit
orchards. Major international airlines fly into Damascus and Aleppo.

designing and analyzing studies of public perceptions of agroterrorism and
unintentional food contamination, in addition to analyzing a broad range
of existing data, including results from national surveys and media
analyses. The position is a full-time one year research appointment, with
the possibility of renewal for an additional year.
Required qualifications include a Ph.D. in a relevant discipline,
including but not limited to Communications, Psychology, Sociology,
Public Policy and Economics, strong quantitative skills, strong
writing skills, and a track record of publishing in peer-reviewed

regelmäßigen Arbeitszeit) für eine/nWissenschaftliche/n Mitarbeiter/inzu besetzen. Die
Vergütung erfolgt nach Verg.-Gr. BAT IIa.Zu den Aufgaben gehören Forschungsarbeiten
insbesondere im Bereich mikroökonomischer Betriebs- und Haushaltsuntersuchungen bei
Landwirtschaften in Benin und Burkina Faso. Die Analyse der Wirkungen von Neuerungen im
Baumwollanbau sowie der ökonomischen Politikanalyse als Partner eines interdisziplinären
Forschungsteams. Es besteht die ausdrückliche Möglichkeit zur Promotion.Vorausgesetzt
wird ein, mit Prädikatsexamen abgeschlossenes wirtschaftswissenschaftliches
Hochschulstudium, vorzugsweise mit den Schwerpunkten Entwicklungs- oder
Agrarökonomie. Die Bewerber sollen darüber hinaus hervorragende Englisch- und
Französischkenntnisse in Wort und Schrift besitzen, sowie über sehr gute Kenntnisse im
Umgang mit formalen Analysemethoden verfügen. Auslandserfahrungen, Erfahrungen in
empirischer Feldforschung sowie in fachübergreifendem Forschen werden vorausgesetzt.
(Es wird vorsorglich darauf hingewiesen, dass bei Vorliegen eines qualifizierenden
Abschlusses außerhalb der Wirtschaftswissenschaften die Promotionsvoraussetzungen im
Einzelfall durch den Promotionsausschuss überprüft werden) Wir fördern Frauen und fordern
