PhD Position in Environmental and Resource Economics
(Theme: Climate Change, Land Use and External Changes) at ETH Zurich (Switzerland)
The Chair of Environmental Policy and Economics at the Institute for Environmental
Decisions, ETH Zurich (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology), invites applications for one
PhD position for three years, with full funding. The starting date is expected to be on or
before July 1, 2008, depending on the successful candidateґs availability.
In 2005, the Stern Report (2006) indicated that agricultural production is directly responsible
for 14 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), while indirectly responsible for
perhaps another 18 percent of GHG emissions through deforestation and the burning of
biomass. Although land use changes at the local level could significantly contribute to climate
change mitigation, such strategies are not often applied. Policies aimed at reducing GHG
need to address global externalities and align local-level incentives with global-level benefits.
Economic policy instruments such as environmental taxes and payments for environmental
services (PES) seek to internalize environmental costs or benefits into production or
consumption decisions. As part of CLIMPOL (Climate Policy Making for Enhanced
Technological and Institutional Innovations), a collaborative research project at the Institute
for Environmental Decisions (IED), this PhD will investigate how PES could be used to
optimally manage the effects of both climate-related and non-climate-related uncertainties on
farmersґ land-use decisions.
The successful candidate will be full-time PhD student at ETH Zurich, under the supervision
of Professor Stefanie Engel and Dr. Charles Palmer. In addition to their doctoral research
and related PhD courses, they will provide part-time assistance (10%) to the Chair. More
information about the Chair and its research interests is available at: www.pepe.ethz.ch.
Requirements: Candidates should have a Masterґs degree in Economics, Environmental and
Resource Economics, or Agricultural Economics. The position requires excellent
communication and writing skills in English. Other languages relevant for fieldwork purposes
would be desirable.
How to apply: To apply for these positions please E-mail a complete CV, including the
following information, to: charles.palmer@env.ethz.ch : (i) Educational history with the names
of universities, years of attendance and completed degrees; (ii) a list of attended courses in
economics (particularly microeconomics and econometrics) specifying the grades; (iii) names
of two academic referees that could be contacted for more information.
The received applications will be reviewed on an ongoing basis until the position is filled.
Only those applicants whose profiles are likely to fit the positions will be notified for further
details and interviews.
