Doctoral Training Program in Economics and Social Sciences

 

 

The Graduate Center of Economic and Social Research at the

German Institute for Economic Research (DIW Berlin)

welcomes applications from highly qualified post-graduated

students from all over the world to attend its structured

doctoral training program in economics and social sciences.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Applicants must hold a MA degree or a diploma in economics

or social sciences in order to apply. Degrees from other

related fields (such as civil engineering or statistics)

also fulfill the admission requirements of the program.

 

Students with a degree in economics follow the economic

track that leads to a PhD in economics; students with a

degree in sociology follow a social science track which

leads to a PhD in sociology. There is a number of core

courses that both groups of students will attend.

 

 

ABOUT THE INSTITUTE:

 

The German Institute of Economic Research DIW Berlin is one

of the leading economic research institutes in Germany. We

are an independent, non-profit institute involved in

economic research, service and policy advice. We co-operate

closely with universities in Berlin and Brandenburg and in

international academic networks.

 

The goal of Graduate Center's activities is to provide

young, outstanding doctoral students with a research

environment and a training structure that will develop

their talents in an accordingly exemplary manner. It leads

them to a deep understanding of economic and social

processes and offers them the opportunity to apply their

knowledge within the professional research environment of

one of the leading economic think tanks in Germany. The 3-

year program follows a dual training approach. It offers:

 

- high-level core and field courses in the first year, and

- on-the-job training within research projects of the DIW

Berlin in the 2nd and 3rd year.

 

 

PROGRAM DETAILS:

 

After successfully finishing the programme students have

submitted a number of papers to refereed scientific

journals. They will receive a certificate confirming

participation together with a doctoral degree. The Graduate

Center offers a scholarship of 1000 Euro per month in the

first year to each doctoral student admitted. After

successful completion of the first year the doctoral

students are assigned to the research departments of the

Institute.

 

Research positions are offered depending on the volume of

research projects under work.

The Ruhr Graduate School in Economics (RGS Econ) is a

three-year doctoral program initiated and founded by three

universities of Germany's Ruhr Area - the University of

Bochum, the University of Dortmund and the University of

Duisburg-Essen - as well as by RWI Essen, one of Germany's

leading economic research institutes. We offer 8 Doctoral

Scholarships (1250 Euro per month).

 

 

ABOUT THE PROGRAM:

 

The program provides postgraduate education in all relevant

fields of modern economics, covering formal theoretical and

empirical econometric analyses in labor and population

economics, industrial economics, microeconomics, macro-

economics, and public economics.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

The RGS Econ is looking worldwide for applicants with an

excellent academic record and a Master, Diploma or

equivalent degree in economics or related fields. A strong

background in quantitative methods is necessary for a

successful application. The language of the program is

English. Hence, a good command of English is a

prerequisite.

Quantitative Analyst Intern

 

 

American Century Investment Management is seeking a

quantitative analyst summer intern for its MOUNTAIN VIEW,

CA office. The position is with the Research Group of

Quantitative Equities/Asset Allocation team, which has over

$15 billion under management.

 

 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

This position works closely with senior analysts and

portfolio managers on projects in support of the

quantitative investment process. The major responsibilities

of the position include 1) assist senior analysts in

designing and conducting quantitative research projects to

improve stock selection models; 2) implement, program and

maintain research procedures and databases for investment

management process; 3) monitor and report portfolio

characteristics and information level of stock selection

models; 4) conduct research on data sources and investment

systems.

 

 

BACKGROUND:

 

Education: PhD candidates (The ideal candidate is expected

to graduate in 2007) in finance or economics with strong

background in econometrics, and sound understanding of

international asset pricing and international stock market

anomalies. We would also consider former Ph.D. graduates

who are interested in a career change to investment

management.

 

Skills: Candidates should possess strong programming skills

in SAS, C/C++, and Visual Basic in Windows and/or UNIX

environment. Candidates are also required to have decent

knowledge and experience using international financial and

pricing databases such as Compustat Global, WorldScope,

IBES International, DataStream, IDC, etc.

field of comparative health policy, with a focus on Asia.

 

 

JOB DESCRIPTION:

 

Working within FSI's Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research

Center and the Center for Health Policy (CHP), the

successful candidate will be appointed as either a senior

fellow in FSI or jointly in FSI and a relevant academic

department.

 

 

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Applicants should possess an international reputation in

health policy research and a current or planned research

agenda on Asian comparative health policy. Our interests

include research that addresses the consequences of and

policy responses to demographic transformation - rapid aging

and slowing population growth - in Asian countries.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

 

The successful applicant will be a scholar with an

outstanding record of world class publications, acknowledged

leader in the field and with stature in the research

community. The applicant should have practical experience in

development institutions and policy, significant field

experience, and strong abilities in economic research and

policy analysis across a range of subjects related to global

development.

 

Applicants should hold a Ph.D. in economics and have at least

six to ten years of post-doctoral research and policy-related

experience during which a proven record of publishing in

professional or academic journals, edited volumes, or other

publications has been established.

 

 

JOB DESCRIPTION:

 

The Research Director will generate new ideas and conduct

action oriented, cutting-edge research on the question of

how successful development initiatives - strategies,

policies, programs and projects - can be designed and

implemented so that they are sustained, replicated, adapted

to new conditions and scaled-up to solve key development

challenges at a national, regional and global scale. The

Research Director would be expected to design, manage and

oversee significant research undertakings and support

publication and communication activities, as well as carry

out research on specific topics of development

Established in 1996, the School is highly regarded for its

work in the design, implementation, and evaluation of

policy, both in the United States and around the world.

Faculty and staff work closely with private, public, and

non-profit organizations to provide the information needed

to solve today's complex policy issues. The School has two

academic departments (Economics and Public Administration

and Urban Studies) and seven research centers, employing 56

full-time faculty and 22 research associates serving 850

graduate and undergraduate majors and teaching 4000

students each academic term. Degree programs include: a

Ph.D. in Economics; a joint Ph.D. in Public Policy with the

Georgia Institute of Technology; Master's degrees in

Economics, Public Administration, and Urban Policy Studies;
