FROM THE FOUNDATION
World Bank to Host Live Web Cast on E- government June 19
The World Bank's e-Development Thematic Group will host "National e-Government Strategies: Designing for Success" on Tuesday, June 19, from 9:00-11:30 a.m. EST. A panel of experts and practitioners from India, Singapore, the United States, and the World Bank will convene online, giving participants an opportunity to learn how governments have successfully implemented e-government strategies. Speakers will focus on the following questions: Why is it important to have well-designed e- government strategies? Why might the process be as important as the final document? What constitutes successful e-government strategies? What are the key ingredients? How should governments go about designing e-government strategies? What are the steps and processes that are essential not only to the elaboration of the strategy, but also to its successful implementation?
All interested parties are invited to participate in the event via live Web cast, videoconference (connections in 4-5 countries are planned), or in person in Washington, DC. More information is available at go.worldbank.org/KYLN3DZF40. To access the Web cast on June 19 at 9 a.m., go to www.worldbank.org/edevelopment/live. Success Story
Mozambique
In Mozambique, a nation of 19 million people in southern Africa, daily operations have been made even harder by a lack of communication among different government institutions. Mozambique's government recognized the problem and outlined a plan calling for a nationwide network to connect public administration entities, called the Government Electronic Network (GovNet).
With a grant and project assistance from the Development Gateway Foundation, the government completed the pilot phase of GovNet in early 2005, just 10 months after grant funds were disbursed. More than 500 civil servants were connected together for the first time in 15 key institutions, including the ministries of finance and health. They now have a common intranet, a unified e-mail system, more cost- effective access to the Internet, and a shared public Web portal.
This month staff from the foundation will visit sites in Mozambique to assess the progress of the land management component of this program. Learn more about our work in Mozambique.
