research center with headquarters in Taiwan and regional offices around the globe. AVRDC

conducts research and development programs that contribute to improved incomes and diets

in the developing world. Abiotic stress is the primary cause of crop yield loss worldwide and

AVRDC is conducting basic and applied research to facilitate the development of new

cultivars with improved tolerance to adverse environmental conditions, including drought,

temperature extremes, flooding, salinity, and nutrient deficiencies. AVRDC is seeking a post-

doctoral fellow to conduct research on tolerance of tomato to drought stress, which limits

achievement of the crop´s yield potential.

Key Responsibilities

tomato at AVRDC´s Headquarters in Taiwan and its South Asian Regional Center,

Hyderabad India. Specific research responsibilities include:

o

Development of screening assays for drought tolerance and identification of sources of

tolerance in cultivated and wild tomato species

o

Identification of key traits associated with tolerance phenotypes in response to drought stress

under field and controlled conditions

o

Elucidation of the physiological basis of drought tolerance in tomato

o

Participation in genetic mapping and gene expression experiments to characterize drought

tolerance

o

Assist with other abiotic stress tolerance projects as needed

o

Write progress reports and peer-reviewed publications

Qualification and experience

o

Ph.D. degree in Plant Physiology, Horticulture, Agronomy, or related discipline with strong

background in abiotic stress physiology

o

Experience with assay development and physiological assessment of drought tolerance

particularly in tomatoes is highly desirable

o

Background in molecular biology and genome mapping is an advantage

o

Proficiency in English and ability to perform effectively in a multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary

environment

o
