Western Pacific Geophysics Meeting, Session in Hydrology (an invitation from a ZEF alumnus)

March 31, 2008.

Dear Colleagues,

We would like to invite you to submit an abstract to the following session of the Western Pacific Geophysics Meeting (WPGM) organized by American Geophysical Union (AGU) which will take place 29 July - 1 August 2008 at the Cairns Convention Centre, Queensland, Australia.

The Western Pacific Geophysics Meeting (WPGM) provides an opportunity for AGU members, and members of the sponsoring societies in the Western Pacific region, to attend a meeting that serves the needs of geophysicists interested in studies in the Western Pacific region. See: www.agu.org/meetings/wp08/

You can submit an abstract by visiting AGU website submissions6.agu.org/submission/entrance.asp Abstract Submission Deadline: 16 April 2008, 23:59 UT. We are organizing a session in Hydrology discipline during the meeting.

Hydrological Parameterization in Data Sparse Environment: Modelling Irrigated Systems from Farm to Catchment Scale

Water resources for agriculture are becoming increasingly scarce and ways must be sought to optimize the water use and efficiency of the irrigated catchments. The most critical issue for an efficient water resources management in irrigated systems is to understand the complex hydrological processes at various scales ranging from farm to catchment. This requires accurate knowledge of spatial and temporal variations of these processes at different spatial scales for minimizing water losses and identifying true water savings. However, the current ground based monitoring and measuring techniques have limited ability to capture spatial and temporal variation of hydrological variables such as rainfall, actual evapotranspiration, surface runoff, and soil moisture. For this session, we solicit contributions describing hydrological parameterization using the direct physical measurement techniques and indirect measurement techniques (such as geophysical, airborne and remote sensing) for parameterization of hydrological variables in irrigated systems at farm to catchment scales. Papers are invited on the estimation, validation, and error/uncertainty assessment of hydrological parameters such as actual evapotranspiration, soil moisture, recharge, seepage, percolation, and runoff in irrigated systems at multi temporal scales. Special emphasis will be given to the papers dealing with the modelling of hydrological parameters in determining current levels of efficiency of irrigated systems for developed and developing countries.

The selected papers will be reviewed and considered for possible publication in a special issue of international journal of Agricultural Water Management.

Regards,

Shahbaz and Mohsin
