ZEF and "Alternative Nobel Prize" offer scholarships to young scientists

ZEF and the Right Livelihood College offer scholarships (to be funded by DAAD) for young researchers studying at German universities to participate in the Conference of the Right Livelihood Award (“Alternative Nobel Prize”) in Bonn, September 14-19, 2010. The activities for the scholarship holders will take place from September 13-18, 2010.

 

Background:

The Right Livelihood Award (RLA) or “Alternative Nobel Prize” was established to honour and support those "offering practical and exemplary answers to the most urgent challenges facing us today". 137 laureates have since received the award. The RLA conference “Reclaiming our future” in Bonn is the 30th anniversary conference of the award bringing together more than 80 of the laureates from all over the world.

 

The Center for Development Research (ZEF) and the Right Livelihood College (RLC) aim to connect the next generation of scientists with the ”Alternative Nobel Prize“ winners and to facilitate the transmission of expertise and experience between research and practice through networking and collaboration.

 

Participation:

Invited to apply are young researchers (Diploma/MSc and PhD students) who are registered as students at a German university and do research related to one of the following topics:

 

- Sustainable use of natural resources and environmental conservation

- Conflict, social justice and gender

- Markets, trade and consumer rights

 

Fluency in English is mandatory.

 

The fellowships will cover all costs for travel, accommodation, catering, and working materials. Travel and accommodation for participants from Bonn/Cologne region will not be funded.

 

Participants will:

- Work together with “Alternative Nobel Prize“ winners in thematic workshops

- Draft a declaration on how the young generation of scientists can continue the laureates’ work

- Communicate the conference proceedings in publications

- Participate in cultural and social side events

- Receive a formal certificate for their participation.

- A very short curriculum vitae (only 1 A4 page)

- An abstract of less than 500 words explaining your research or project

- Full contact data

 

All documents are to be submitted in English. The deadline is July 15, 2010. Telephone interviews will be conducted in the first week of August.
