Award on Development Research for the best Doctoral Thesis at ZEF

The Prize of the Society of the Friends of Development Research for the best dissertation of the years 2003 and 2004 will be awarded to Dr. Edilegnaw Zegeye Wale from Ethiopia on Friday March 17.

Dr. Edilegnaw will receive the prize, which is endowed with 1,500 Euro, for his doctoral thesis on:

„The Economics of On-Farm Conservation of Crop Diversity in Ethiopia: Incentives, Attribute Preferences and Opportunity Costs of Maintaining Local Varieties of Crops”.

Prof. Dr. Michael Bohnet and Prof. Dr. Heinrich Carl Weltzien, both members of the jury and of ZEF’s Society of Friends, write in their statement of evaluation:

”This thesis makes an important academic contribution to the analysis of genetic resources. The work is an essential element in the research on biodiversity and genetic variety, far beyond Ethiopia”.

The Prize of the Friends of ZEF is awarded every second year to the best thesis among ZEF’s doctoral students. The main criteria for evaluating the contributions are: scientific standard and innovative scientific methodology, relevancy to development policy and to development practice.
