The UN Water Conference at the United Nations Headquarters in New York in March 2023 (more info here) served as a platform for professionals and experts from various backgrounds to come together and address the pressing global water challenges. Among the distinguished attendees were three remarkable individuals who shared a common bond — their time spent at ZEF and their connection to Professor Joachim von Braun. Let's delve into the achievements of Katinka Weinberger, Claudia Ringler, and Susanna Wolf as they continue to make a difference in their respective roles.

Katinka Weinberger (batch 1997), currently holds the position of Chief of the Environment and Development Policy Section at the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP). Her work revolves around formulating policies and strategies that promote sustainable development in the Asia-Pacific region, with a particular focus on environmental issues.

Another ZEF graduate, also from batch 1997, is Claudia Ringler. As the Deputy Director of the Environment and Production Technology Division at the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), Claudia plays a crucial role in shaping policies and strategies related to food security, water management, and sustainable agricultural practices.

Susanna Wolf, a former Research Fellow at ZEF is currently serving as the team leader in the UN Office of the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries, and Small Island Developing States  (UN-OHRLLS). Through her work, she strives to ensure that the voices of these countries are heard in international decision-making processes, particularly concerning issues such as water resources management and climate change adaptation.

The accomplishments of ZEF alumni Katinka Weinberger, Claudia Ringler, and Susanna Wolf demonstrate the profound impact that dedicated professionals can make in the field of sustainable development. Their achievements serve as an inspiration to future generations of ZEF graduates and reaffirm the vital role that research and academic institutions play in driving positive change at the international level.
